CROSS COUNTRY: 2022 ACC Championships - Vin Lananna Press Conference https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tY7UUvt-44c The Director of Track & Field/Cross Country addresses the media prior to Friday's ACC Championship meet at Panorama Farms.
UVA Men's team will utilize pack running early on in the ACC Championship.
This course is the same one as 2023 NCAA championships so watch ACC Network for live coverage at 10:30 AM From Charlottesville, Va. https :// tv247 .us / watch/acc-network/
This is very good. 1st and 2nd are set, though I think ND could win if they run like they did at Nuttycombe. UVA is the most unproven team in big meets, they could easily get 3rd, but they could also end up 5th. I think NC State, UNC, and Syracuse are all interchangeable. UNC and Syracuse ran terribly at Nuttycombe. If UNC runs as they are capable, they could end up 3rd. If NC State finds a 5th man (or if Berger get healthy), they could get 3rd. If Syracuse runs like they did early season, they could get 3rd. And looking big picture, they ACC could get 6 teams into the NCAA meet.

Let’s add a score to this.
I am not knowledgeable enough to predict that, but surely someone here is
i actually believe that UVA will win. had their 2 to 5 (who ran as a group) gone 5s faster, they would have beaten Wake at the last meet.

This "had they gone 5 seconds faster" thing that I've seen multiple times has no bearing on the ACC championships. The meet in which you are referring was essentially a duel meet. The close score in duel meet is amplified tremendously in a meet like the ACC championships where there are 4 more teams plus individuals from others contending in that space. A 12 point win in that Wake/UVA meet could easily be 42 points in the ACC championships. And unfortunately, the hypotheticals like " if they had done X..." are nothing but daydreaming. Yeah, if Notre Dame still had Dylan Jacobs, they would win easily. If Duke had four 13:30 guys they could win... we could go on and on about these "if only" scenarios. The fact of the matter is college XC is tough... what happened is what happened and they did not all run 5 seconds faster.
I also think you guys are sleeping on ND. If UVA beats Wake, it doesn't equate to an ACC championship. ND was unreal at both Piane and Nutty. Unless Chris Neal does something dumb, I think these guys will be very hard to beat at both ACCs and regionals.
You are very correct about the pack running. We've seen in many many times in the NCAA championships. Not only can it create big point swings, but if your pack get stuck in the 20s or 30s rather than in the front of the race (e.g., NAU at NCAAs in 2019), you can get 6th at ACCs rather than 2nd.
I don't remember Wake Forest having more than 3 studs: Aaron de Huerta, Zach Fancioni, and the Flemish guy who went All-American in the mile.
I think Ian Shanklin who narrowly missed All-American by one spot 2 years ago in the 5K (Morgan Beadlescomb beat him for 8th) might have a coming out party here and there are a couple other NC State runners looking pretty good. Also, I believe Ahmed Mohammed is gone? Can anyone confirm that?
Does anyone know if they're planning on racing freshman Gary Peters who had an excellent senior year? 1. Feghan Curtin, Fla St 2. Matt Carmondy, Notre Dame 3. Parker Wolfe, UNC 4. Ian Shankllin, NC St 5. Iziah Steury, Notre Dame 6. Zach Fancioni, Wake Forest 7. Antonio Lopez Segura, Virginia Tech 8. Thomas Vanoppen, Wake Forest 9. Aaron de la Huerta, Wake Forest 10. Brett Goldstein, NC State
Individually Parker Wolfe and Carter Solomon are the favorites imo. It's very hard to predict after that, but I believe in Carmody to have a return to form and finish top 10.
Shanklin is going to play a big part in whether NC State can challenge for 3rd or finishes 6th or so. If he runs like he did at Nuttycombe they probably dont have much of a shot at 3rd. If he runs like he did at Joe Piane where he beat all of the ND guys plus guys like Dylan Jacobs, Duncan Hamilton etc., then they have as good a shot as anyone at 3rd.
Similar story for Patrick Anderson for UNC just replace Joe Piane with Paul Short.
I feel like people keep doubting UNC, they're a top 3 team at ACC
Think some of them went out too hard at nuttycombe and not placing where they could have.
It's crazy man. Notre Dame and Wake are clearly the class of the conference and have been ranked top 10 all year, but they are beatable at ACCs.
You are right about UNC... BUT, I feel like it's that same exact way with UVA, UNC, NC State, and Syracuse. The 6 teams will be top 6, but the order all depends on who is healthy, who shows up, and who makes the least amount of mistakes. The ACC is SO good and deep these days, all 6 of these teams have run like top 15 teams nationally this season. And aside from ND, they've all laid an egg at some point this season (at least the teams that actually ran against competition...) UNC and Syracuse had a bad one at Nutty and NC State ran terribly at Piane.
This meet this year is damn exciting from 1-6 teams and top 10 individuals. I'm a biased old ACC guy, but it is a great time to be an ACC fan!
PS. Bummed Florida State is down this year, but rebuilding like Virginia Tech and Duke hopefully! :)
1. Notre Dame: better 5th guy in Carmody, and better at their best.
2. Wake Forest: not going to get worse than 2nd unless something crazy happens.
3. Syracuse: a little disappointing at Wisco but their 1-5 gap will be much smaller at ACCs.
4. Virginia: I think they will pay for dodging competition all year.
5. NC State: just a bit worse than the other teams.
6. UNC: very close to NC State, but lost at Wisco.
7. Duke: not close to the top 6, not close to the rest.
8-10. VT, FSU, GT in some order.
11+ Miami will be last, who cares otherwise.
My only problem with the UVA downgrade is that they know that course so well, and they are pretty solid. “Competition”? They’re running. Nobody’s blocking and tackling each other. Who’s in shape and who’s ready to perform that day. Homeboys might make y’all scratch your necks when they show some rope on the home course.
