Can you imagine the NE Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons deciding not to play overtime in the 2017 Super Bowl and expect to both be awarded a Lombardi Trophy like the Olympic high jumpers both getting gold medals? I agree, make them run, jump, or play to win.

On the one hand, he should stick by the rules. On the other hand, if there is a time limit per lap, and they both are positive they can't do it, then it's pretty tough to not throw them a bone after 101 freaking hours. IMO, he should have said, "OK, we're going to make an exception... going forward, there will no longer be a time limit per lap. But, we're going to go until one of you can't make it. If you both finish after the normal time allotment, then the next lap will commence as soon as the second runner finishes the preceding lap. If one of you finishes a lap more than 30minutes ahead of the other, then that runner is the winner." Then, if they both decided to end it, they both should be DQ'd and the event would have no "winner".

Don't care. At some point, it's dangerous to continue running, so I don't blame them for calling a truce. Lazarus broke his own rule but so what, he's a weirdo and it's a weird rule to begin with.

I agree about the Olympic high jump. The rules should be crafted in a way that doesn't allow for a tie. I don't see it as dangerous in the same way.

They just need a better way to break a tie if more than one person finishes the final lap. Should be who finished the last lap first.

I think he actually comes up with the stuff sober.

That only applies to sports that want to taken seriously as real competition, you know, where they do whatever it takes to decide who is truly the best. This just shows ultras just want to be treated as exhibitions, or at least this event. Ties only happen in real sports when there are rules to declare it a tie, not when the competitors feel like it.

My suggestion is next year, when the race starts, nobody move and have the contestants declare everyone finished in first place.

Agreed, it's weak. People (i.e., I) don't pay attention to this race to necessarily see a world record. They (i.e., I) want to see a single winner and a bunch of losers. That's the appeal of this format. It's heart-breaking, and that's what makes it great.

"Sharing" a win is not a win, and it's not in the spirit of the race. I'm less interested in following this race in the future. I'll just wait for some results update from irunfar

'in the 2022 yr race two runners broke the course record, but nobody won?'

Hopefully he puts an amended clause in before next year's race. But for now it seems the current rules made the race unique. And the runners decided to be a good sport and have everyone DNF since they were depleted of energy. They accepted the rule as is, he should have let it be. Change the rule going forward.
