The women's podium was a huge surprise. Great race. The bike leg was full of excitement and shifting positions. Lots of penalties made things quite interesting. Unexpected end result. Worth a watch!
I don’t really follow too closely. When did they split the mens and womens races to different days? seems like a big logistical nightmare to close the course twice
Sanders will get out of the water in the front pack. He’s been training with front pack swimmer Colin Chartier.
When I read the thread title, my first thought is "I wonder what will go wrong with Lionel Sanders" ... because something will go wrong. Training beast but seems to always have bad execution at the biggest races.

This is the first year.
The Ironman corporation and the island of Kona make a ton of money off this event - it has a two week calendar of events and draws a bunch of international tourism, so my guess is that closing the roads twice isn't a huge deal in the scheme of things.
Looks like he's making his move. It's honestly mind blowing at his weight. It has be a conscious choice, I can't imagine how much how much he must be eating to keep that weight up.

he has said before that when he races/trains at a lower weight his results are worse. surely his team has it figured out better than any of us.
Really impressed with Laidlow so far. I think he will get run down, but its going to take something special from KB and Gustav (both will easily break the record for the run split from the looks of it). will be interesting to see which one cracks and when.
This is going to be an exciting run. Leader up 6 minutes on Blummenfelt. Think their PRs in the marathon in an Ironman is about that far apart
well technically KB has run 230 and I think Laidlows best is 245, but Laidlow doesnt have a lot of experience so Im sure he thinks he can run closer to 240. KB and Gustav said they would be disappointed with 235+ so we will see.

Ah I thought they were saying 2:41 and 2:35. Definitely looks like they are going to catch him at this point though. Should still be a good finish. 4th still isn't far behind either.

Yeah they seem really into the data. Over such a distance you would think every pound would make a big difference but maybe it's just something with him.
Laidlow is still holding a sizable lead with 10km to go. Gustav probably at least 90 seconds back, but he is flying. Going to be a close one. KB not out of it, but falling back.

Sam had a heroic effort, but Iden about to fly by.
