I thought this quote was poignant: “Of course I’m not perfect. I’ve not really achieved all the spectators or my fans wanted from me. But, on the other hand, those results were not easy to achieve.”
That quote speaks to the pressure of being the GOAT. It’s difficult to live up to expectations when someone has reached the level of success that he has. He wants to win and break records just as much as his fans do. When he fails, he knows he not only disappointed himself but also all of his fans. Heavy stuff.
Imagine how frustrating it would be to dominate, win gold medals, and break records the way he did, then have your body betray you time and time again while someone that you used to defeat on a regular basis ascends to become the GOAT marathoner and get all the attention. Ouch!
Both this interview and the one he did with letsrun show that he still has the desire to be the best. He’s not just going for a cash grab, as some people on this site have disrespectfully accused him of doing. It makes me root for him even more. Here’s hoping he gets the win on Sunday!
