NAU does not have an All American type runner from Arizona this year. In the past they had Abdi, Tyler Day, Andy Trouard all develop after they got to school. Look and most of the winning teams in the last 20 years they have had a fantastic in state athlete pan out.
As the cost to attend school has gotten higher I think this is even more important. The only teams I can find are the run that OSU had around 2010, but keep in mind they did not have a full track at that point. They added other events after this period and have not been as good since. Even Vin’s teams at Oregon had Kenny Klotz and Galen Rupp, in state. Wisco had Solinski. Even some of those Arkansas teams had Dan Lincoln.
This year obviously BYU has a lot of in state guys, OSU has Rodriguez, but I don’t believe Stanford has a top 40 California runner on the team. I also think this has held great teams from Iowa State and Arkansas back recently.
This also applies to track, both Texas and LSU had heavy contributions from local athletes on their teams. Although I did not go as deep (I’m sure the Chez Oregon days are an exception).
With the Young twins going to Stanford, will that finally get them the championship? Hasn’t been since Ryan Hall was on the team correct?
Love to hear what you all think.
