Some explanations for the disappointment of Julien Wanders in Copenhagen - according to his friend, Bonny Kibiwott, Julien contracted flu during the trip to Denmark but still decided to run but he was really under the weather. Julien was all set to run a time between 58:50-59:40 during the race. As for Bonny - he had missed training for two months and had only been training for one month prior to this race. He’s getting ready for Valencia. Bonny was ready for 58:20-59:00.

This appears to be a legit “excuse” because if you follow Wanders on Instagram you will see that he is in superb shape in all of his runs especially the long intense runs that they do in preparation for the half marathon. In fact going by the footage on the reels he was just as strong if not stronger than the 40 year old Swiss runner of Eritrean origin, Tadesse Abraham, who clocked possibly the fastest time ever by a 40 year old plus runner in the half marathon with 59:53. This means that Julien was probably in 59:30-60:00 shape in Copenhagen if he had not contracted flu. Of course, this is conjecture, but it makes sense.
As for Bonny Kibiwott, Wander’s Best friend and sparing partner (remember Bonny had been recruited to pace Julian in his debut marathon in Paris back in April 2022) he had missed two months of training during the past few months and only had one month of specific training for this half marathon so his time of 60:00, which incidentally was exactly the same time that he had achieved when winning the Paris half marathon last year - was satisfactory for the quietly spoken but always sincere and immaculately dressed Bonny Kibi.
I am relieved of these turning of events because it means that both of these athletes are actually in superb shape if you look at the big picture. Remember in 2021 Bonny had achieved a remarkable 13:06 / 5000 m with very little preparation and finishing the last 2 km at sub 13 minute pace.
Hopefully Wanders will redeem himself in the coming months. He has been very unlucky during the past two years with different setbacks, and the pencil slim introverted Swiss man is only 26 years young so he has a lot to show if he can reign in his impetuous racing style which sees him bolt to the front in the early stages of almost every race that he takes part in. Different athletes in Iten, also told me that he (Wanders) is not able to control himself when he does “easy runs” or at least that was the case when I was there back in April and May 2022. Many or most Kenyan elites often do their “easy” afternoon runs at around five minutes per kilometer pace (sometimes even slower ) but Julien would always try to go to round 345 to 4 minute pace per kilometer. Too fast for a recovery run.
Sir, I believe he was obliged to race for his sponsored team, ASICS. It may seem that he is overrated but in fact that is not the case and he is still the European record holder for 10 km and half marathon on the road, 27:13/59:13. Thank you for recognizing that Julien has had a lot of setbacks during the past two years explaining some of his disappointing performances.
Latest news: Bonny Kibi is getting ready for the Valencia half marathon in October where he hopes to run under 5930. His friend and sparring partner, J.W., is entered for the Valencia marathon in December 2022, where Bonny believes that Julien can achieve 207 or faster.

How far does this obligation extend? What if he has an injury? It seems foolish and unreasonable to demand that someone race a half marathon with the flu.

OK. Let me process the whole thing.
1. Wanders came to Copenhagen with "only" one good month of training prior to the race.
2. He got a flu during the trip.
3. He decided to run although he felt crap
And with those three reasons taking into consideration, Wanders still aimed for a time between 58:50-59:40? If all of this is true Julien Wanders is really making it hard for himself. He should really start listen to his own body! If the preparations doesn't go according to the plan ,with a flu and a body that is not responing well prior to the race, then why is he still going with the front group? And still he finishing the race when the body clearly doesn't respond....

If you look at the splits he didn't go for a 58-59..

You're getting everything confused. It was Kibi who came to Copenhagen with only one month of solid training for the half marathon. Wanders had solid training for many weeks before the half marathon in Copenhagen but sadly fell victim to flu a few days before toeing the line at the start but he did the honorable thing to honour his contract with his sponsors ASICS.

Okey. I missed the part where it was Kibiwott who only had one month with solid training coming up to Copenhagen half.
However, it doesn't take away the stupidity of Wanders finishing the race with a body not feeling well. Therese is a big difference finish a race if you have a bad day at work, another if you still feeling the consequences from a flu. Instead of DNF a race, the only thing Wanders is getting from this race is longer recovery time.
It would have been much more honorable if Julien came to Copenhagen half, showing his gratitude by being sponsored by ASICS, accept the current situation that the preparation didn't go as plan the last days and from there accept the situation. Either the body does respond OK (unlikely but you never know) or it doesn't and then it's perfectly fine to draw out from the race, explain to the media "there is no reason to push the body at this stage when I unfortunatly got a flu prior to the race". But naaa, I hate to DNF. A medicore time feels better...Even if it stresses the body more than it can handle at this stage.

He should have conferred with you who obviously know a lot better than him how he best handle his sponsor and what is best for himself.

Ehm, okey... Please tell me at under what circumstances it is wise to pushing the body when it clearly doesn't respond due to illness? And regarding being sponsored by ASICS I really indulge Wanders to be a part in their team. That doesn't mean he should jeopardize his own health. Something I also think/hope ASICS would support.

Lol, when I read this response….from our Nordic Kenya aficionado.

Sir, The flu is a very unpredictable condition to have and sometimes athletes can get away with it and even run up to their optimal best but sometimes they are greatly weakened but before starting a race one can never tell how well one is going to perform and even the paradox is that sometimes one feels rubbish in the warm up and then perform well and vice versa, so one cannot hold it against Julien that he raced in Copenhagen because he was hoping for a good performance. In retrospect Julien ran 1:03:47, which is rubbish for him (59:13) but he probably came away with a theory that he can hold that pace for the full marathon which would give him around 2:07:40, which would be a decent second outing in the marathon after his 2:11:50 in Paris this past April. Julien is an absolute monster but he’s unpredictable and he seems to have some issues with regard to physicality. Comparing him to the two New Zealand twins, the Robertsons, the pencil thin Swiss man is not as strongly built as those two kiwis. I’m not sure if Professor Canova is still coaching Wanders, but I suspect he is and for that reason the Swiss rap loving (https://youtu.be/ifNfpzkoY9s) (artist is Ninho, who bears a striking resemblance to soccer superstar Kylian Mbappe) distance runner is in good hands.

You sound like a fool sometimes. You say sometimes one runs well with the flu? Not the flu that I know. I wish I had your flu. If you are racing with the flu, you are a fool.
Absolute rubbish, a cold maybe but definitely not flu! I was at the race and he was fine. And if he was in any way ill, he's extremely selfish as he was mixing and eating with all the athletes in the elite field for the 2 days before the race.
