Sahlman was well beaten in 7th and ran 20 seconds slower than last year. Gotta wonder if the magic is over.

Dude, you can’t call this team done just yet!
It’s just declining. There’s a difference between done and declining.
They are still the best in the nation, just not on last year’s level. No team has ever been or ever will be. Unless some school decides to recruit the top 5 guys in the nation.
but after this year, yes they are done.
Other than doshi, their top nonsenior finished sooo far behind Cantu
Their top freshman only finished 5th for np in this race, so 10th on the team (without Hector) overall. They can win it in 2025 but not by a huge margin
Also, just remember. Aaron lost to Doshi earlier this season. So he might not be top 3 on the team this year.
Aaron has always been the least consistent of the fab 4. I think it’s due to his work ethic. I don’t think it’s a coaching issue. NP is declining because they’re not getting insane talent right now. I think the coaching is still very good.
Sahlman is coming off an injury
@2:08
Aaron Sahlman ran 1:48 in the spring, to go with 8:03 and low 4, after around 14:15 in xc. I wouldn't worry about him if he's healthy by mid-October.
The above numbers made him one of the best juniors ever, so we don't need comments about lack of work ethic or anything like that.
7 pr's among 7 finishers in the Boys Rated Race. I'd say they're doing all right!

14:01.7 and 7th coming back from injury is bad??
Doesn’t every high school boy PR at Woodbridge?
They are doing alright. That is the perfect description. After this year, this team will be alright; not great, not even in the same universe they are now, but alright.
Welcome back to earth Newbury Park and good luck finding the next Youngs and Sahlmans.
It’s unrealistic to expect them to perform at the same level as last year. They clearly had a year where everything went right - they had the talent, coaching, avoided injuries, no bad races, etc. That’s not how the sport usually works though, so I’d expect some regression to the team even if they will still be very, very good.
Jesuit LA seem to be finding some Sahlmans and Youngs.
5k’s At the showcase
Mullen - 10 - 15:28
Desroches - 12 - 15:17
Crawford - 10 - 15:27
Buisson - 12 - 15:28
Dowd - 12 - 15:34
Vocke - 11 - 16:03
Sampedro - 11 - 16:07
Monahan - 9 - 16:11. His 1600 time was faster than Lex/Leo’s 8th grade time. Keep that in mind. He could be with the top dogs next year
Vocke had an off race and should be #1 on the team, and Sampedro is returning from an injury and he was with deroches last year.
next year their fab-5 will be elite on a good day!
Also, Jesuit has an 8th grader who was only 4 seconds behind Monahan last year in cross
15:08 not 15:28
Most boys do pr at Woodbridge (some running it for the first time are guaranteed a pr), but if they ran the same course in previous years and they are faster this year, then they are better. I thought I heard they'd changed the course this year. There were a few sub-14s, one in which the 13:49 guy was 40s ahead of 2nd place. So, it seems like the course was faster. But that being said, think about how good NP is this year and how much their younger guys have already improved this year. With two guys who ran 13:30s/40s last year not running and Doshi not running, they still had 14:01/14:40, so that with those three added, they'd have probably 13:30, 13:30, 14:01, 14:20s, 14:40. Not too bad and Sahlman will be way ahead of where he is now at the end of the season. That's another national championship team this year. Next year, they'll lose four of their current top five, but will have five to seven at sub-15 level for a course like this later in the 2023 season. Three freshmen better than 16:09 is a very solid foundation for the future.
(King has a sub-15 and sub-15:30 freshman! Torres has a sub-15 frosh. There were 14:43-44 frosh from Southlake TX (ran 4:49 1600 in 2022) and Clark NV. Tostenson of Crater Lake, Gorze's school, ran 13:57 as a sophomore, and another soph, Landon Pretre of Menlo Park, wasn't far back in 14:06!
Leo Young/Lex Young/Aaron Sahlman/Dev Doshi/Aaron Cantu/Braden Seymour is the current top six, I think. Seymour was ill for the Marmonte race, but still ran 15:20. Next year they may be thin at the top but very deep.
Again, this year they are incredible. No debate.
Also, another very good description of them next year; solid.
The days of NP as a nationally relevant team are over. It was an a fantastic ride!
Granada #1 California, everyone else taking L's
Granada is better than Great oak this year actually. But neither are close to Newbury park.
both teams also seem to lack a low stick .
Granada and great oak lost to more teams than I thought they would. And I expected another California team to challenge them.
#2 nonsenior was so far behind Cantu. Next year it will be doshi and everyone else
