Absolutely terrible.
Thought this would have popped up on LRC but haven’t seen anyone post it yet.

Reading the comments on the Fox News story - just about everyone is telling women to run with a gun??? I have enough difficulty with hand held mace. If the attacker comes from behind - what use is a gun? Don't think this will end well. Sherry Arnold (also a teacher) had the same thing happen to her in 2012. She was murdered.
This was mentioned in another thread.
But this is horrible and I don't think that is common in Memphis at all.
People get shot all the time but usually that is gang related and mostly (not always) in certain areas.
teacher shortage just got worse!
Anyway, this is way I almost never leave my house, an when I do I feel unconfortable. World is a scary place.

Liar. Maybe 1 out of 10 mentioned that. So, stop lying and eating mushy peas.

What a sad and insensitive thing to say. The poor lady has been abducted and is in dire straits, praying someone finds her. Can you even imagine what she's going through? God Bless her and I hope she is found soon and alive. What a messed up world we leave in.
I’m a Memphian and this is really horrible. She was abducted a block from the community track where tons of us do our speed work. It’s on the UM campus and generally a safe spot to be.
Memphis has a crime problem for sure, but it’s typically gang/drug related and happens in about 3 discrete areas Of town. I’ve never heard of something like this in the 15 years I’ve lived here.
She was out at 4AM which is at the very tail end of criminal activity. In the Raq most homicides occur between 9PM-3AM, but there are some at 4AM and 8PM.

There’s literally nothing to be learned from this. It’s not the woman’s fault in any way, and it’s unlikely that she would be able to have done much to prevent it. Maybe pepper spray, but running with a gun is absurd and dangerous. Running at 4:20 am should not be dangerous.
It’s not a common enough occurrence to modify your behavior in a way that’s effective. It will probably terrify a lot of people who are in no real danger and not really prevent any crime. But it will cause anxiety and suspicion.
This is why things like this are even more upsetting than the ‘usual’ tragedies that you see in the news. I really hope there’s some way that she comes out of this.

it's a difficult choice to make. If you're running in an urban area, you should carry a gun for your protection; however, by being in an urban area, if you use it you're likely to get a jury that's pro-criminal. And I can guarantee you you'll get someone who knows him and says that "he was a devoted father who was about to go to college to be a future astronaut".
Tbh, if it were early in the morning, I'd shoot to kill because the lawsuit would be worse if he survives and is maimed, and I'd run away and say I was scared. Thankfully, I live in a red area so the prosecutors aren't pro criminal, but if they wouldn't catch me then nothing happened, and if they caught me I was too scared and ran away - but I din'du nuf'fin.
Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
I am going to withhold judgement on this for a while. The reports are a little fuzzy but from what I can gather:
1) Someone reported Eliza missing and must have told them she didn't come back from her normal morning run. ( Eliza is a married mother so I'm guessing it was the husband who reported her missing)
2) Police reviewed security footage from the area and found footage of a dark SUV stopping in the area.
3) At some point the police put an APB out for the dark SUV as suspicious
4. But... Police also towed an entirely different SUV from Fletchers home and collected a computer and garden shears from Fletchers home as evidence.
I don't think all the critical facts are in on this yet.
It is not absurd to run with a gun. Not at all.
I once had to use my Glock on a coyote.
ITS THE HUSBAND
This is beyond normal crime. Even for high crime areas you don’t see stuff like this.
Question I have was this spur of the moment? seems quite brazen. Or did someone notice her out several mornings in a row and plan it?
There should be more footage
I hope for her safe return, which seems very unlikely. You can't claim you know what happened here. However, in general, it is insane to go out running at 4:20 a.m. in that part of Memphis. Not too many cities are safe at that hour. And pretty much none of them are safe for women to go out jogging at that time.
