According to Arizona Coach Benard Lagat’s most recent IG post, he seems to be bragging about making his women run further and harder AFTER they were pushed so hard they threw up. I don’t know how to post the picture but it’s there. How does Arizona keep ending up with coaches like this?
If you're the type who is prone to throw up during workouts or races, you don't need to run *that* hard to feel nauseous. It's especially common during the first tough workouts after a summer of mostly aerobic training.
And anyway do you have something against training hard? And why single out the women? You're okay with men training hard but think women shouldn't?
Will any of these end up as international top runners, though? I cannot believe the US is underperforming in middle distance when you have so many resources.

Why are you doing hard workouts with undigested food in your stomach?

I know one of the women on the U of A xc team. U of A under Lagat is actually more laid back than many other other D1 teams. She is very happy there. You can relax. It's not bad like you are imagining.

Why is he bragging about holding practice at illegal hours? I know that Tucson is hot, but 5 am would be a nightmare for a kid.
From the NCAA rulebook,
17.1.7.11.6.1 Required Activities Other Than Competition. [A] Required athletically related activities other than competition (and associated activities) shall not occur during a continuous eight-hour period between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
This has some exceptions, but none of them apply to Arizona
(a) During participation in a regular-season multiday contest, event or tournament, conference championship, other postseason championship or an NCAA championship; (b) Required athletically related activities in the locale of an away-from-home competition on the day before the competition if the institution's team arrives in the locale the day before the competition; (c) Participation in a promotional practice activity (e.g., first practice of the season); (d) Participation in recruiting activities, including student-host duties; (e) Participation in required life-skills and team-building activities; or (f) Health and medical activities (e.g., medical evaluations or treatment for prevention and/or rehabilitation of injuries) or academically related activities (e.g., meetings with academic advisor, tutoring sessions).

I have to agree. The richest country on earth, the world's third largest population, unlimited financial resources, a dedicated collegiate program, cutting edge science and technology and this is the best you can do?
Waiting for the "others are doping while we have the cleanest athletes and system in the world" excuse in 3, 2, 1 ...

The NCAA wastes our distance athletes in so many cases out of pressure to win conference. They put them at high mileage and intensity straightaway and pressure them to train and race when injured. So, many of them don't improve much for years. The party atmosphere also means that a lot of them get little sleep and drink a lot instead of resting for training, in contrast to club athletes outside the U.S. Still, you get some world class athletes this way--mostly foreigners--who come through the U.S. collegiate system semi-intact or even great, like Lagat himself, Mario Garcia Romo, Ollie Hoare, Alicia Monson, Galen Rupp, Chris Solinsky, Matt Centrowitz, Jr., ...
If Lagat would run a few puke-and-go workouts himself, he could still easily run the first ever old man 45+ year old masters sub 4 mile. It's only 3 years since he ran a 2:12 marathon and 4 or 5 since his last 3:54 and a 13:06.
Some wiseass will of course claim 40 somethings always fall off a devastating cliff, based on their pathetic anecdotal sample-of-one own experience. But Lagat can do it.
Problem is he clearly doesn't want to, and that's that. He's already Bernard MF Lagat and doesn't need more MF cred.
Sorry, but these kids would MUCH rather get up and run at 5AM than finish a run in 90F+ heat. And the rulebook needs to include starting workouts a mere hour earlier for safety and health of the runners.
