Shame that Hocker isn't in the Lausanne 1500. A guy who was 6th in the Olympics could surely have gotten a lane. Regardless, good to see him out on the circuit, I hope he smashes it

He might not feel like he is ready for it yet.
Bingo! This happens quite often. I know someone who was coming back from injury who turned down the Bowerman to run in the B-mile at Pre.
It's also possible the field was full by the time Hocker decided to run in Europe. Given that his agent is Ray Flynn, you'd think he could have found him a slot if there was one. (Hoare & Kerr, who are running, are also Flynn clients.)

He's run 3:50 for the mile twice, run sub 7:40 for 3k and sub 13:10 for 5k, and finished 5th in the Bowerman mile. That alone actually means he probably belongs more in the field than Michal Rozmys, Gonzalo Garcia (probably pacing, so disregard if so), and Sadiki. None of those guys have done anything close to as impressive in the last 12 months.

People were chomping at the bit to watch him fail and then piled on when he did. It happens all the time in sports when someone gets a lot of hype, fans are eager to see them knocked off the pedestal.

So, why the hate? What did he ever do that was offensive?
He might not be at his best now but it’s better to compete than not compete at all regardless of the event or venue. He’ll be back. I’m the meantime you can go back to running your 10 minute miles, 1 hr+ 10k road races, or whatever it is you do. Losers like you feel like you need to tear down achievers since you accomplish so little yourself. It makes you feel better about yourself, I guess.
