He does what he did to Kipchoge in 2008, with a 3:57 last mile and 53 last 400. Jakob could hang on longer than almost anyone, but in the end there is nobody capable of beating that version of Bekele.
assuming that they're both clean and use the same tier of spikes, i would say bekele. if bekele knew what kind of 400m kick jakob has, then bekele would probably run the race at a faster pace which would make jakob struggle. when you watch bekele in those 5000/10000m races, there is a reason why he always runs behind someone until the last 400-500 meters. it's because they know they have nothing on him when it comes to the final kick

You all realize Jakob ran the final 200 of the Euro 5000 in 25.8 and the last 1000 in 2:23 and he looked like he was jogging. He’s massively fit, probably ready to break 12:40 in a 5000 TT with good conditions right now, and he’s a 3:28 1500 meter runner, if not better right now too. I don’t see where people think prime Bekele can simply run Jakob into the ground. Sorry, but if Kenny was to win, it’s going to be hard for him. If Jakob continues on his current trajectory, in 2-3 years he’ll be the 5000 wr holder and there would be no race fast or slow that Jakob would not win against any opponent real or theoretical over 5000m.

Yeah I think I’m with you Wise Old Man. I mean, as I posted a few pages ago I think contemporary Ingebrigtsen would finish 2nd if transplanted to the 2008 Olympic 5k, but all the people saying the question is “blasphemous” are being silly. For one, it seems close minded to liken Bekele to an irreproachable God.
Ingebrigtsen is a very worthy 5k champion who dominated the WCs (which was billed by some beforehand as the best 5k field ever assembled…since some favorites flopped and O. Chelimo & Grijalva surprised, it’s now being remembered as a weak field—absurd) and dominated a 3:28/12:50 guy at Euros by running 25.78 for his last 200. Yes, it was a slower race, but 3:57.00 for the last 1600 capped with a 25.78 is no joke.
It’s also pretty wild how people are saying that Jakob would’ve been whipped in the Mo Farah era, when people used to say that Farah was merely capitalizing on an exceedingly weak era! The fact is both Farah and Ingebrigtsen are amazing athletes.
Ingebrigtsen could no doubt run a 12:57 with a 4:56.97 last 2k—he’s that good. Remember Grant Fisher ran 12:53 with a 4:59.97 last 2k indoors. Could Ingebrigtsen run that 12:57/4:57 with a 53” or better last 400 while overtaking the man who’s set up the race, in hot weather? No, he’s not that good, nobody’s ever been that good as of yet.

The point where WOM is likely incorrect is that when I see Jakob run I do not see a guy who can break 12:40 currently and he has been training hard a long time. Jakob may not have as much time as some may think. Kenenisa ran 12:37 when he was 21 years old (almost 22) and he ran 26:17 when he was 23 years old. Jakob will be 22 next month and he has been training at a high level for some time. Jakob also sounds like he does get tired of it and wouldn’t mind a more normal life. The window is likely much shorter than some may think for Jakob to run extremely fast and I don’t see that he will do it. Only time will tell.
I agree with most of this -- Jakob would definitely have been extremely competitive in that legendary 2008 Oly 5k, but he wouldn't have beaten Bekele that day. But your comparison doesn't acknowledge the superspike factor. With today's spikes, that 2008 run is probably worth somewhere in the range of high-12:40s to low-12:50s. Could Jakob, or anyone for that matter, pull off a run like that, especially in the heat and humidity of Beijing? Not likely.

Yes, I guess we don’t know for sure if Jakob will be more Komen or Kipchoge, but I think the rumors of his desire for an early retirement are ill informed, and when I listen to his interviews he sounds like he has every intention of competing in Los Angeles is 2028 and well beyond. He’s just too competitive. I think we will see him on the roads eventually. What’s clear is that we are in a highly competitive era of 5000m running. I don’t think there was ever a wc 5000 field with as many sub 12:50 runners, and Jakob dominated them. It was a cakewalk for him, in fact he was coasting the last 50-75 meters. Bekele is currently the goat, but underestimate Jakob at your own peril. He’s not stagnating at all. He appears to be getting stronger and stronger. Is he a g-d, no he can be beat. Wightman shocked him, but he’s a dominant force.
Call me when Jakob runs the second half of a 26'49 race in under 13'00 like Kenny B did when the baton was from Geb in Paris 2003.
But he doesn’t even run the event. That’s like talking about Jakob’s 1500m credentials to look down on Bekele.
But I do agree prime Bekele would beat current Jakob in a 5k race. Jakob is not on El Guerrouj’s level yet.
Kenny's second half of the race was faster than Jakob's second fastest 5000m. Certainly not what Jakob is capable of, but on paper, Jakob may not have even out kicked Kenny with a full 5000m already in the legs.
It really is a toss up. I’d put my money on Bekele out leaning Jakob, I believe bekele is probably about 1 percent mentally stronger than Jakob which is the difference maker.
It took Bekele 5 years to win a global 5000m title after this WR.
He set his WR in 2004. Beijing was in 2008. That's 4 years.
Correct. Plus Kenenisa did not contest the 5000m at the World Championships in 2005 and 2007. In 2004 Kenenisa won the 10000m and then lost by .2 in the 5000m to the great Hicham.
