The male tights are just as bad. I just watched the infamous Ben Johnson 100m and they all wore the middle distance loose shorts. I don’t want to see the junk of these athletes. It was distracting to see the semi erect swinging junk of DeGrasse doing the victory lap in Tokyo. Grant Holloway wears those shorts, the rest of the men should go back to wearing that.
in the sprint events men wear thights that go almost as low as their knees.
women wear short shorts or even less.
which one works better?
I wear half tights (to just above the knee) for 3 reasons:
1. I like the compression on my quads and hamstrings.
2. I live in a cold weather state and in the winter I can wear them down to about 25*. With regular running shorts my legs aren't covered and the wind gets up my shorts.
3. I can carry (if I have to) keys, inhaler, hotel room credit card key, etc in the little zip pocket on the back.
Racing, I don't notice a difference but the pocket is important if I'm alone at a race.

1. No one asked
2. OP is referring to racing, not your 3 miles at 8:40 pace during your business trip
The real question is why do they wear all those chain and hair pieces if the athletes are trying to be as fast as possible? shaved head and no chains mean business.

The point is that none of this actually matters.
Tights are crucial! You need your half-tights for compression! Unless you're a woman, in which case no compression is needed! Necklaces get in the way! Except for the men and women who wear them for entire careers!
If men wore women's shorts, the races would be unbroadcastable.
You would like that wouldn't you.. .
Support your hypothesis, irrelevant simpleton.
What did that atrophied little bundle of nerves stewing in the base of your skull see in those ten words I typed to persuade you not only to think I'd like that, but to share your deep analysis of my personal preferences with the rest of the Let's Run message boards?
It should be left to the individual for what makes them feel efficient. Some male pro triathletes will race in speedo's for run only events because they feel the difference. (I posed this question in person when I saw men racing 5k/10k in speedo's). Whatever gives you a mental edge i suppose. Hurta chooses compression shorts although she has run in both the shorts and bikini style. I wouldn't say either style is better. But it is important mentally how efficient the athlete feels in them to perform their best. And at the pace of pro athletes. Everything matters to get a split second advantage. Let them have the choice.
