How many people drown in the ocean per year? The great lakes are massive, there are a lot of people that go on the lakes. I imagine fewer people drown in Lake Michigan per mile of shoreline than drown in the oceans per mile of shore line.

Yeah, in Winter it is. I had a relative die that day. The ship split in half and it was pretty much Winter at that point, dangerous conditions. In the Summer, no big deal...if you can swim (like most any water). All 5 lakes are fine to swim in, not a big deal. What happened that November was tragic as were the conditions. Other ships made it, but not the Fitzgerald. I wasn't born then but it was a sad day for many.
