Well it was only 200€ so I’m sure it’s not going to effect his bank account. It’s kind of an unspoken rule that Mamu (who never beats him) chose to ignore. In any case they seemed to have taken it in good spirits. Kilian was out of contention for podium so was a bit complacent. I’m sure if he was leading he would be looking over his shoulder.

Maybe - but he sure sprinted hard and tried to prevent himself from being passed. So he may not have cared about the money, but he sure did not want to be passed.

But, the OP didn’t say he cared about the money, just that it was funny and he lost out on prize money and points. All of that is true. There were no insults or anything in the OP, just that it was funny, and it is. Maybe watch it?

I didn’t make up the unofficial rule and I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, just that it exists so it was a pretty sly/desperate thing to do. He wasn’t making a statement about the rule or anything like that.

When the winner crosses the line. When they have been clearly beaten. When the course record is no longer in contention I guess. I don’t know I didn’t make it up. It’s just a European thing. More often it happens the away way around. The approaching athletes will warn them/slow down or give them a little push over the line.

Here in Spain we say he has been posterized. Many memes of his getting caught and I am sure he will be in all those YouTube videos about “celebrating too early.”

sh!t is about to get real in trail running with the inclusion of Kenyans. They are hungry to win and prove themselves. Mamu is experienced and has raced Kilian about 20+ times so a great scalp for him as Kilian was unable to close.

More interesting this year then Mamu passing Kilian is the fact that more and more Kenyans entering trail running now and slowly start to challenge the dominance of Kilian and others. Will take a couple of years still but shows that C-level Kenyans are eventually able to run better on hilly terrain as well. The current Africans are at best 2:10 marathoners. Imagine someone would pump serious money into the golden trail series or skyraces, so that eventually 2:04 Ugandans/Kenyians/Ethiopians starts hoping into these races.

Big fan of Jornet and the others but they know themselves their limitation and have been fortunate that in the past trail running has been somewhat of a niche sport.

Its because in trail/ mountain running the uphill/downhill part is usually considered to be the worthy or more valuable part of the race and so if you have been clearly beaten in the mountains in a mountain race some may consider the race to be over. But also this is changing. We have more hungry Africans not giving cr*p about some inofficial European Gentleman rules because they know they are the better runners and what counts is the win, not some polite gesture!

That’s completely wrong. And especially in the example given. The sum of its parts is what’s important as in any race (up/down/flat/technical/smooth) only in trail running it can get very varied. You have to be strong in all. It’s quite common to see a sprint at the end when it means something. Even for 4/5th but the manner in which it happened was a bit off. Only one knew he was racing so it wasn’t very honorable. Mamu was clearly beaten by a Kilian with cramps and not race trained. Why he desperately snuck up on him and took advantage like that just didn’t make sense given their positions, effort and what would represent a just result for the better athlete. Kilian is a 9 time winner and his only objective is to see if he can win a 10th. Clearly he couldn’t this year (not because of the competition because if he was focused on this race he would have won). A Kilian racing to win would not make that mistake. I guess some people just need the most basic of rules or life gets too complicated?

honestly, the guy is such a fantastic runner, and generally just doing his own thing out there. his dominance in the mountain running scene has been unprecedented and he is the undisputed goat (CR at the Hardrock 100 1 month ago, for example).

i don't think he has anything left to prove.
