Oregon didn't go after Jerry right away, he wasn't the first choice. From what I hear he wasn't even in the top three. Enough people turned it down that it trickled back to him and this is why he is coaching there. I don't think anything corrupt happened in the hiring process with Nike I just think Jerry was who was left after several great coaches turned it down.
For what it's worth I think Jerry will be a great coach and has proven success at the NCAA level so I'm sure he will do so again..
I was surprised he's only getting five assistants. A well-rounded track team needs people with expertise in a lot of areas. You don't want a distance guy coaching the shot put or the hurdles coach working with the pole vault (at least usually. There are, of course, great coaches with knowledge across multiple event groups) This ain't the local HS.

I wasn’t. Since the NCAA only allows 6 paid coaches for a combined program.

Five full-time assistants is pretty good. Not to mention how many people would be willing to volunteer for that program if given the chance.

To the OP: You are mistaken. There were coaches who interviewed who would have accepted the position period. As has been stated, Jerry was not even a candidate and only came into the picture after interviews had been completed. Does this make people believe that Mr. Knight got involved?

There were multiple coaches who turned it down. I'm not saying Jerry was the last resort choice, he wasn't, but he wasn't the first or second.
Schumacher, who is also maintaining his position as coach of the Bowerman Track Club, is able to hire five assistant coaches and two administrators.
After hiring all these people what exactly will Jerry be doing?
Oregon is blatantly breaking NCAA rules if they exceed 6 full time paid coaches and if they have professional runners working out with the collegiate student-athletes.

You are allowed to have as many full-time positions as you want but only some can be allocated to coaching.

What about professional runners suspended for doping? Are they allowed to just run into the college team and run with them?

Universities don't offer their 4th choice a 7-year contract, let alone one worth $3.4 million.
That isn't a contract you give out unless you are 100% sure you have your man. Is it possible there were other highly sought after candidates? Yes, but I'm sure those few being considered for this amount would be considered splitting hairs as far as which they would feel comfortable in this role.
Jerry was absolutely on the shortlist for this job. If he wasn't it would be a shorter duration contract. Locking in a new hire for this long is only something you can do with a lot of confidence.

It would totally make sense for mike smith to turn down the job; he has a great thing going in flagstaff. I’m curious who else got an offer. I could see Diljeet Taylor being in a position to turn down the job as well. my thinking is it’s a high pressure situation & results will be expected right away & if you already have something good going on elsewhere why risk it? it’s a good job opportunity for jerry bc he has something to fall back on (btc) & it’s not a big move
