Somehow I missed that he ran a 3:33 a few weeks ago, probably because it was overshadowed by the world championships. So his 2nd place at US championships was backed up with a blazing time.
With the 3:33, you have to think that he should have been signed by a bigger club. But there are fast guys at ATC and they have improved. Don't forget Shane Stroup(?), who ran a fast 1k indoors this year.

Ah yes, because the 1k is such an important and hotly contested event. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate ATC and their investment in the sport. They have a good structure that seems to support their athletes well enough. But good lord when has anyone on that team done anything remotely of note? Check their team records page, it reads like a middling college team compared to how fast people are running these days. Maybe they just haven’t been able to draw in the talent to be a seriously competitive team, or maybe the coaching is just bad. I honestly don’t know. Either way he could have done better than ATC

ATC is very lucky to sign Davis. The talent they get out of college are guys who barely finish D1 all American. They usually only stay one, maybe 2 years then quit.

Their women have run quite well. Olivia Baker went from a 2:00.4 PB coming into the season, and now has broken 2 six times and 1:59 twice (while performing very well at US Trials). Allie Wilson has become a 1:58.1/4:04.0 athlete from 2:02/4:15 entering 2021. Not seeing as many elite performance on the men's side but Davis seems like another level of talent from the men on the squad.

The Atlanta Track Club has done exceptionally well with its women's middle distance team over the past couple of years. Up until a few weeks ago, Jonathan Davis probably wouldn't have been considered a "big" signing, but that perspective has changed quickly.
Fans forget that he ran quite fast in high school - the kid is a talent! As noted in the interview, he had a string of bad luck for a couple of years but is now showing what he's capable of. I think it's a great fit and will hopefully attract similarly fast men to join the group as the Begley's have been developing talent.
I've written many times why I am such a fan of the Atlanta Track Club, but their organizational infrastructure is how most American pro teams should model themselves. Would be great to see the likes of NYRR, P3R, CARA, and others create something similar.

Based on what I see/hear in interviews with the guy, I would not be surprised if he wanted to work a "regular job" and very few clubs accommodated that.

A few months ago he was going to forgo a pro running career entirely to take a job in public accounting that would have annihilated his running career. Maybe ATC will let him pursue his "post running" career at the same time as his current running career. Or maybe not. Either way, it's a positive development and I hope to see him take a shot at a sub 3:30 in the next few years.

You can work a real job while training at a high level. A lot of top runners don't do that just because they don't have to, or they have a crappy degree and wouldn't really make much money to be worth working a real job, or they just don't want to work. But there are plenty of examples of people working jobs related to their degree and continuing to get faster. They just aren't the biggest names because the biggest names are making $100k+ to just run and wouldn't greatly benefit working an entry level job in their field to bring in an extra $60k that would entirely be taxes at their top federal tax rate of 24% or more as well as state income tax. It's just not as much incentive to spend 40 hours per week working when the vast majority of your income comes from not working the real job. For someone with a smaller running contract, like $20k-$40k it is more appealing to start your regular career as well as running.

The pro runners for Atlanta Track Club work part-time for the Atlanta Track Club. Makes sense for Davis because he was unsure about giving pro-running a shot or starting his career, now he can do both.
