Alex Yee who won the Olympic triathlon last year and just won Gold at the Commonwealth Games and Hayden Wilde who got the Bronze and then the Silver have both run 13:29 for the 5km. You've gotta hand it to these guys. Training for 3 completely different disciplines all at once and still running these kind of times is pretty exceptional. Have to wonder what they could potentially do if they solely focused on running!
Wait so a sport were the running portion more often then not decides the medals has fast runners? Shocker. I am sure they would be very good runners if they did that only, I am just as sure they would not challenge for international medals and likely not earn nearly as much income as they do in triathlons. So good choice for them both.
Many have quite an extensive running background and probably learned they are fast, but not fast enough for just running. Thus triathlon.
If that was the case for them you would have expected them to have run those times when they were only focused on running but both of them ran the 13.29 within the last couple of years or so after they had already been professional triathletes for several years.

I stand corrected. He took silver. But it doesn't take away from the point of my original post. Top triathlete who is basically an elite runner also.

Ahh sarcasm...a persons desperate attempt for attention lol. The point was that they are running highly impessive 5km times without been full time runners. Hayden Wilde as an example on average only runs 3 times per week and yet is still capable of a sub 13:30 5km.

yes but he doesnt need to run much more, when you take into account the aerobic and muscular benefits they are getting from the bike. You seem impressed they are only running 3x/week when in fact they are going to be spending soooo much more time exercising across all 3 disciplines, than a normal elite athlete would spend running (bar elite marathoners maybe)
Also Yee's PB is 13:26, having also run 7:45 & 27:51 (in his only ever 10K)
These guys run a lot more than 3 times a week. Usually elite short course triathletes run between 70-110 km some even more. Also even an elite marathoner does not come close to 25-35 hours of training.
Really shows more cross training should be done by runners, if they didn't need all that muscle mass for swimming and replaced it with more biking/running they'd probably be near sub 13:15 range for 5000.
TLDR- start biking more before adding more mileage

Alex Yee didn't got silver at the Olympics. The Norwegian fat man owned him on the run!

Yea. Triathlon getting more competitive every year is insane and shows the mysteries of “cross training” in physiology… I think originally Triathlon was just created as completing it but now people want to race all these distances…
transitioning from one sport to the next and keeping a good tempo up is really hard…

Only on Letsrun will someone with visible abs be called fat because he doesn't look like a toothpick. Thank God it was a dude though, God forbid this comment was about the opposite sex.
One of the main reasons is Uk athletics funnel runners would are super fast but unlikely to medal into triathlon at an early age as there is funding available as the Uk are done well in both men and women events
