Didn’t Weini Kelati do the same thing following Junior worlds? She went missing and turned up at a relative’s home in Virginia.
Miss Kelati sought asylum. There was an article in a paper that described her situation. Isn't Eritrea in some civil war or something?

This is pretty common for large sporting events with athletes from developing countries.

Actually, they aren’t missing anymore. But the whole thing is very weird.
The Eritrean athletics federation (or whatever it’s called, too lazy to double check right now) reported them missing to the UO police on the 24th.
They now have reported that, hey, they’re no longer missing! In fact, they are back with their teammates and working out etc!
What a strange story.
They almost always come from Eritrea or Uganda.

Eritrea is the North Korea of Africa. It is one of the most repressive dictatorships in the world.

Missing in Eugene as opposed to returning to Eritrea? They did the math on that and punched their ticket to the promised land.
