They're comparable competitions and on paper I think Worlds are just as prestigious of an accomplishment. But "Olympics" is such an enormous and impactful brand name that it's not even worth arguing. People who don't even watch sports are awed by Olympic gold, Olympic medalist.
Flip side, why debate it within the context of people who aren't full-time fans, or fans at all. What do track obsessives think? I still think the Olympic brand is too strong to overcome, but again, I really see them on paper as equivalent accomplishments.
Olympic brand is much more well-known and prestigious. Non-track fans know what the Olympics are. Only track fans know the World Championships. Billy Mills won an Olympic gold medal in a big upset and was basically able to live the rest of his life off that. If there was a World Championships in his his time and he won that instead of the Olympics he'd be selling insurance after his track career ended.
There's an actual interesting discussion to be had on whether Olympic focus and prestige outweighs having the additional entrants from defending/Diamond League champions when it comes to which event is harder to medal/place highly at.
Nothing in track compares to an Olympic gold medal that is the ultimate accomplisment.
World records are written forever into the progression and seen often. People forget golds.
Case in point Wilson Kipketer is remembered. Who beat him for gold? Vebjorn Rodal and Nils Who?mann
El Bakkali has people saying he should go for the steeple WR after winning a WC gold. Fat chance, Shaheen's WR is legendary. El B can get oly gold but not that WR.
Daniel Komen has probably the most unbeatable WR out there. Practically a god! There's always a next olympics to try for the gold again, but forget it, noone has a chance at Komen's record.
The World Championships should mean more. No sport worth anything lets the Olympics be their biggest competition. The NBA championship is more important than the Olympics. No one in soccer would trade the World Cup, Champions League, or one of the top league championships for the Olympics.
If a sport considers their pinnacle the Olympics it is a second rate sport.

As others have said, Olympics are more prestigious.
And in some events, the Olympics are more competitive. For example, the top marathoners routinely skip worlds, but rarely skip the Olympics.
I'm not sure of this, but it does seem like athletes are more likely to take risks in the Olympics and run more events, which stiffens competition. Examples from 2021 that come to mind are Hassan in the 15/5/10, and an athlete like El Bakkali who won the Steeple in 2021 and attempted to double back in the 1500. Often these efforts won't matter, but it's an extra variable.
I also feel like injured athletes will prioritize in a long cycle Olympics preparedness.
I think the Olympics rate above Worlds simply because they're scarcer. An elite gets twice as many attempts at a World's medal, as they do an Olympic one, which has the effect of diluting the prestige somewhat.
