Watching Tola demolish the field today reminded me of Kipchoge’s Olympic marathon victories, as both runners made decisive moves after 30K to win their races by over a minute. The conditions were obviously very different, but I still find it interesting to compare their 5K splits starting at 25K:
25K split:
Tola Eugene: 1:16:12
Kipchoge Tokyo: 1:17:24
Kipchoge Rio: 1:18:13
25K-30K:
Tola Eugene: 14:58
Kipchoge Tokyo: 15:07
Kipchoge Rio: 15:02
30K-35K:
Tola Eugene: 14:11
Kipchoge Tokyo: 14:28
Kipchoge Rio: 14:25
35K-40K:
Tola Eugene: 14:09
Kipchoge Tokyo: 14:56
Kipchoge Rio: 14:44
40K-Finish:
Tola Eugene: 6:06
Kipchoge Tokyo: 6:43
Kipchoge Rio: 6:20
Here are their 10K splits from 30K-40K:
Tola Eugene: 28:20
Kipchoge Tokyo: 29:24
Kipchoge Rio: 29:09
Again, I recognize the conditions were very different. I’m not trying to say Tola was better today than Kipchoge was in Tokyo and Rio, and I apologize if I offend anyone for daring to even make the comparison. I just think Tola’s splits today are noteworthy. It seems that he studied Kipchoge’s championship race playbook.
