What a joke of a sport. The world record holder and reigning Olympic champion is not running at the world championships. There doesn’t seem to be much mention of this. Why is it not a bigger deal that the biggest name in the marathon is simply not running?

Because elite marathoners have only 1-2 marathons per year and they’re not going to waste one on Worlds. The five majors are much more important than the Worlds. Of course, the Olympics matter the most.

PS. It is better to talk about the people who are there and it is so common for top marathoners to skip worlds.

The fearful Americans won’t even offer a visa for the plucky Brit who wishes to run in the US B race marathons, why would the GOAT want to run?
Leave it to the B level runners to compete in the marathon

Running a summer marathon means top marathoners have to forego a payday running a fall marathon. Except for the Olympics, it's not worth it.
