How did we miss this? I've been interested to see Heath jump on the trails with his xc pedigree and track chops! I thought he'd make team but I wasn't crazy enough to think he could beat Gray on a mountain but thought it would be at least close. So many fast guys out in the mountain championship at Loon, very interesting to see.

Same. Anyone thinking Heath would beat Gray on a course like this clearly hasn’t seen the course. Had all my money on Gray winning. I too thought Heath would be top 3.

I don’t know what Heath has been up to, but without specific training for this type of course you will get worked.

Sure, but Lauren Gregory smoked the field and she's been specifically training for T&F and XC until perhaps a month ago.

She has raced mountain races before at least, and I don't think Garrett Heath has. Lauren Gregory was 3rd at World Juniors for mountain running her senior year in high school

Seems like this course worked even seasoned veterans of the sport. Weather and day matter a ton at that top level. Sometimes heat and humidity affect you and sometimes not. The body changes frequently it seems. Guys from hot places did bad and oddly enough some athletes from cooler places placed high

Have always felt Mountain Running a good fall back for the "baby face assassin". She did spectacularly as a high school at the Seward Alaska Mountain race.

Dan Curts in second for men in second trail race (DNF at whiteface mountain race week before). Not sure if he’s fully focused on the trails now but great start either way

The course at Loon is easy, you can run almost all of it. Sure, the Walking Boss is tough, but the rest of the course is pretty tame. The Whiteface course the week before, that course was hard. Most of that course, both up and down, was walking. Whiteface had more elevation gain in half the distance of Loon.

Garrett has trail experience, he won a big train race a few weeks back beating some long time studs in the sport en route. He was ready for mountain racing, maybe just not for this field of elites
