Sean Brosnan says Newbury Park kids do 4+ miles of the classic 30/40 workout

Only the coach doesn't know wtf he's talking about. The 30/40 workout he speaks of was not an Oregon staple. That workout was rarely run. Once or twice a year.

Now if he misspoke and meant to say 30/30s he'd have a point. Oregon did those often. Going stretches of those (generally on Monday) for weeks on end. Most did 10-12. Sixteen if you were in 4 min shape (according to Bill). Dellinger told me that Pre got up to 24.

30/30 (often) and 30/40 (rare) are two very different workouts. Know the difference.

4 miles at 14:30ish 5k pace....sounds reasonable. lol. I mean, maybe it's possible, but it's something that would be done very, very rarely.

He talks about having his guys run 4 mile tempos at 1 minute faster than their mile pace, which sounds way more reasonable.

I wouldn’t believe anything this guy says. They don’t run 60-65 miles per week like he says. Even the new, kids on the team are running over 75 miles per week. You can say I’m lying, but unless you’ve been told by someone at the camp, you really don’t know.

i believe Nico could have done it. but to say "My guys do it" as if the whole group does it often sounds exaggerated. who knows about the mileage, etc. might be like a "jerry mile" type of thing where he has his own definition of a mile. or they don't count easy morning miles or something else.

a lot of coaches give you bits and pieces, but you never get the full, undistorted picture.

And some are just dishonest for whatever reason.

These HS kids are not running any workout like a 30/40.

Then repeat.

Basically you have just enough time to turn around and approach the line for the next rep. Its all on a 30s count.

As fast as those kids are 12--16 laps aren't out of the question. But it will be difficult.

Yet, jogging through 3 rounds of qualifying for the CIF state track meet would be too demanding for them.

If we're super strict on time, I'd believe 2-3 miles of 30/40 is feasible for Lex & Leo, and Colin (last year). Not 4 miles. Maybe Nico did it once when trying to hammer for a workout.

No way they're doing this workout often, nor should they be.

He should be installing in these kids it is important not to burn out and overtrain. It isn't healthy. Concentrate on still running when you are 60, not running 4 minute miles as a teen or in your 20s. Longevity is more important than speed.

Who can run a 4 mile tempo faster than their mile pace?

1 minute faster especially

His best guys are running 4 mile tempos in 12 minutes if you believe this crap.

I have my half mile kids do a 40/30 as an 800 x2. Full rest in between. 4 miles of that just sounds crazy; I don’t care who you are. Granted my guys are 18 minute 5k types not to be confused with Newbury but that’s hard to believe.
