Instead of taking out one man with a shot gun or air rifle, with an AR-15 the shooter could have taken out multiple people and this would have been a mass shooting.

The perpetrator used a shotgun. So why is it a false rumor?
Actually looks like it may be a home-made musket of sorts.
After all this talk of banning AR-15s in favor of muskets, maybe he wanted to prove that even with the strictest gun laws in the world, and security guards close by, people can and will build muskets and murder people with them.
And he (suspect) was close enough to be quickly captured. He must have been all-in on this mission as his homemade firearm didn't let him do it anonomously from distance where he could try to escape.
