Today 7/7 marks the 23rd anniversary 7/7/1999, of ElG’s 3:43.13 mile WR. If that’s not enough, next Thursday 7/14 will mark the 24th year anniversary of ElG’s 3:26.0, over the slightly shorter 1500m. EPO is a helluva drug.

Let me guess, you think El G took EPO and no one in history has?
Does 1990s EPO explain why the 400, 800, 5000 and 10,000 records have all been broken in the last ten years?
But somehow the distances right in the middle are unreachable.
Yeah these people make me laugh. They just can’t accept that he was super good, I’ve even heard Coevett claim that he is a 3:34 guy or something without doping and that’s the reason he is so slow at 800 (but unsurprisingly he doesn’t say anything about Jakob running 1:47 and 3:28/3:46 at the same time). You all will not believe me but I know him personally and I really believe that this guy never took anything. I will not explain more but there is no evidence or proof that he ever doped. It’s also crazy everyone on letrsun assume El Guerriuj was doping but very few people say Bernard Lagat was doping even though he was only .34 second slower. Even more crazy is more people on letsrun defend Shelby Houlihan than El Guerrouj even though one has had a positive test and not the other.
I'm sure it's been discussed before but is 3:26 the objectively better performance? I think it is, but I also think that will fall sooner than the mile record.

I agree with the sentiment here, but I would bet on El G having doped. That’s not an indictment of his character however, I’m just a cynic. Regardless, he’s the GOAT by a good margin (drugs or not) and will probably always be one of the greats in the sport.
Happy birthday to his world record. I hope Ingebrigtsen, Cheruiyot, and others will try to challenge it in the coming years.

Imagine having the IQ of a snail. That’s what you both have.
I view El G much in the same vein as Komen, albeit much more consistent and long-lived. Both would’ve been greats without doping, but the juice is what got them over the hump to 3:43 and 7:20.

Imagine insulting someone just because he doesn’t agree with you coevett.

Seriously El Guerrouj was training 13 times a week at age 15, that’s as much, if not more than Jakob Ingebrigtsen at the same age, and his training was aimed at long term development by developing a strong aerobic base before implementing 1500m speed work once he gets older. He even got a medal at world u20 in the 5000m when he was 18, just like Jakob at the same age, before specializing in the shorter distance.
I also know for a fact he ran a 4:01 1500m barefoot without any specific training when he was 15. How many middle schoolers even run that (a 4:19 mile equivalent) after years of specific training ?
You can totally think that he was doping and that’s fine, but I don’t see any reason to say El Guerrouj was doping more than there for your idols, Coe, Ovett or Cram for exemple.
Calling it...we're going to see a 3:25 1500m and 3:42 mile in either 2025 or 2026 and, thus, Hicham El Guerrouj's reign over the 1500/mile will come to an end just as Komen's reign in the 3000/2 mile did in 2023/2024.
Records are made to be broken. 3:26.00 and 3:43.13, while legendary records, are not quite at the limits of human capability in my opinion.

Current contenders to break the 1500m record are Jakob/Hocker/Kerr, and the mile record Jakob/Nuguse/Kerr, in order of likelihood.
