8000 people can run sub 27?

Have the talent? Probably more than 8k. Take the percentage of runners that have done it and then apply that to the population.

He means any one of the many elite runners can run sub 27 on the right day in the right conditions.
But they also need to be able to close the race with sustained middle distance speed plus an extra kick if they want that 🏅

I could have gone sub-27:00 on my run this morning if I'd kept it under 3.5 miles.

You’re mistaken.

2:25 is on pace for a 3:37.5 1500m, and it’s only 2/3rds of the distance.

Considering that 3:37.5 isn’t world class (the World Standard is 3:35.0), holding that pace for 33% less time is a far cry from world class.

Or like coming through 800 in 1:56 and continuing another 25%. There are dozens of collegiates who could do this. Not world class.

I think a lot of it depends on trips to sabadell and being friends with Jama Aden.

Okay so "anyone can run 27 minutes" is clearly just a figure of speech meant to segway to his real point which is that in order to compete for medals in the 10k you need to also be able to rip off that last 1000m in under 2.25 which he is 1000% right about. I mean say what you will about Farah the guy would know - he did the 5/10 double more than anyone in history and in the majority of those he needed to run right at about 2.25 for the final 2.5 laps to win them.

Can Farah even run 28 flat right now?

He is likely talking about elites when he said anyone. Not your average hobby jogger.
