Joe Gray NEEDS to do this one. Easily wins and probably breaks record en route is my bet. He has made it clear no prize money isn't a draw for him really which sucks. Mt marathon could easily put up really good money with the media it attracts at least locally
Max is such a ridiculous endurance beast, and I sometimes wonder if he doesn't get enough press (maybe he doesn't want much more). Also top masters runner at Zegama, in 16th overall.

Joe would not be at Max on this course. Joe is only a slightly better climber, but Max is an insane descender.
Gray has literally beaten max in every up and down type of race the last decade man. Are you watching the sport? Also, you think he is only slightly better uphill? Again, not sure you're watching. Just looking at US champs last year and Uphill mountain events such as Mount washington road race alone and Gray was clearly out ahead and it wasn't close for the uphill portions
Is this the most un-shirted race in America?
You're insane dude! Did you see broken arrow sky last year? Gray crushed max in that climb!
ummmmm I believe Max is aWorld mountain running champion....which means he likely beat Joe that day....sooooo no Joe has not beaten Max in every up and down race
Max is a beast and I'm proud of him for running so well and winning this race!!
Learn to read! I said he has beaten him in all of them the last decade. Keep in mind Gray won the world champs twice and in both the up and the up and downhill comps! Max never won uphill and in fact didn't even make the USA team for the uphill champs the year after he won worlds. Gray also beat max in every up and down championship 2013 and beyond if I'm reading correctly.
Gray only beat Max by 14 seconds last year at the US champs 6 mile. Max was 1:23 behind at the top. Yes, Gray is a tremendous climber, but Mt marathon is way way more technical both up and down than anything Gray ever races. Max would crush him in this race.
Again I don't think you follow the sport. Gray took a wrong turn on the descent and still climbed back up and went back to the trail and won. Not sure you can say Max would beat Gray an any short mountain event no matter the technicality as Gray has literally dominated him every single race for years. Explain the other 20 previous races Gray beat him. Guess they too weren't technical enough or didn't have any downhill? Don't discredit the man, you can be a fan of Max and still give guys who are better their credits!
Not on this course - it’s steep and short uphill which means Joe does not lead by much at the top - Max crushes the downhill -besides If you know Joe , he is not running if there is no prize money 💰
Gnar gnar course was pretty much a downhillers course dream. Yet Gray still won. Course was almost 50/50 up vs down ratio wise. Mt marathon is 70-80% climb then descent. Gotta give Gray the nod on this one with most of the run being uphill for certain.
Max didn't need to push the downhill this year, so his downhill time was over a minute slower than the fastest downhiller. The results site is currently down for the men's results, but I think he was only 5th fastest. Looking at his past downhills at Mount Marathon, his best downhill was 10:29 in 2018 (about a minute faster than this year) when was second and chasing David Norris. That's still about half minute slower than the fastest downhills by locals (Bill Spencer, Eric Strabel, Taylor Turney...)
I'd think that Gray would have no problem keeping up on the downhill. The scree and road are easy, and the gut/cliffs you would want to practice a few times, but shouldn't be a problem for a good mountain runner.
The fastest uphill is 30:xx, and the fastest downhills were 10:00, so about 75% up/25% down.
All the stats you could want on the previous races in the link. Fastest men's downhill times are on the last two pages:

That dingbat is overhyped by a certain crowd. He has no worthy record, so how do you expect him to have the Mt marathon record?
That race isn’t world class by any means for guys like Gray or Max even so a record there means actually very little. If gray is overhyped then what do you consider all the guys he’s beaten and the records he does hold over guys that are always held in high regard? To call him overhyped is a slap in the face to all those he’s beaten including me so I’m a bit perturbed by your remarks (; If he is overhyped then you just be the bees knees man!
Congrats on winning your 5k marathon Max!
Cool bro, congrats to him. Most people that age can't run a mile
Wasn't this the race where some old dude ran years back and was never seen again, probably because the poor dude fell off the mountain or something? wonder if one of these days one of the runners finds his skeleton
