True, but why not gamble for one of the runners on the fringe who can run low 15s, just go from the gun, make everyone run a legit 5000M, and if they let you go, they the rest will fight for only two spots
Yeah great to see Grant use his superior fitness appropriately. ~2:55 for the last 1200? Absolutely beastly. He's gonna take a lot of confidence from this after the 10k upset.
The 4 strongest athletes were the 4 fighting for the team. It was hotter than ideal to go from the gun and it was a smart race play for Schweizer/Cranny.

This. Amazing there wasn't at least one person in the field brave enough to just so 'f**k it'.

Because the runners on the fringe aren’t capable of running away from the field?
someone on the fringe has a much better chance if the race is slow. If youre competitors are better than you, youre not gonna beat them by doing all the work early while they sit and kick on you
Faith in Grant restored - I see a medal in two weeks
Not if he runs another 60 second final lap like he did here. Pretty much every Ethiopian can close in at least 53 off that pace, so can Kiplimo and Cheptegei. Kincaid has a better medal shot than Fisher in the 5k, the guy ran his last 200 in 26 seconds
I'm just super impressed with Mantz. I thought he might try some 10000s, but I thought he would be immediately to the roads for half marathon
Yes Mantz excellent performance.
While I love the Woody kick, if he lets everyone go at Worlds like that when he has a ton left he will be picking off guys for 8th place while the medalists are hugging at the finish.

Sorry that was wrong. More like 2:58. Still super impressive. Probably .5-1 sec faster if he needed too.

There are some that simply don't understand this. They think anyone can push the pace and bury those better than them. Bor? Jager? How'd they do after taking a turn at the front early?
I was giving commentary to my non-track fan associate, and I had to keep noting that the usatf commentators would pick up on what I was saying in a few minutes. Sometimes they did. About ten seconds after Bor dropped I said "Jager is pacing, too. He'll drop in two or three laps." And how could anyone in that position not have known that Woody would make a serious run over the last 400? On the other hand, no commercials, no Dwight Stones. Overall, I'm happy to have been able to watch the whole race(s).
