on the other hand Brazier had 7 years of training to Flatts 6 (both started in middle school). And one of them waswith a coach used to athletes at this level . Clearly Flatt is going 143 next year🤣

Seriously predicting who improves and who stagnates is hard. Cade made a huge jump this year that a lot of 1:50 people never make. Hopefully he has one or two more in him.

At the beginning of this week's LRC podcast Wejo said he asked Cade when he turned 19 and Cade said in May.

I will never understand why you Americans evaluate athletes on base of hs or college year instead of using age. The world, european and national championships for athletes under the age of the 20 are everywhere the same. In Europe an athlete is classified as U14, U16, U18, U20, and there are national championships based on this ages. Your sport is based on school and it's very cool, but the big picture is that in international youth competition what matter is the effective age. And after 20 years old all athletes are in the same group(even if Europe, where something like NCAA doesn't exist, we have U23 championships as well).

If Flatt is a very strong athlete he should face the best 800m runner in the world juniors in Cali instead of trying the US trials. Andreas Almgren and Kalle Berglund finished 3rd in Eugene 2014, beat only by kenians.

I will never understand why a college freshman of 19 years old would prefer doing summer training and preparing for XC instead of trying to compete at the world juniors. To me representing the national team is way better than an All American award, but maybe it's a cultural concept.

19 in high school is just not the same as 19 in college. Not only did Brazier have far better training and competition in high school in Michigan, but more importantly he had been training with 45 and 1:46-48 guys in College Station, Texas for a year before he ran 1:43.55. And who led him out in that race as a perfect pacer? Mcbride! I'm not debating who was more talented. Brazier was a remarkable talent. But a year of college training will do wonders for an athlete irrespective of age. Instead of 5 minute guys and an English teacher coaching you, you have world elite coaches and training partners at a very high national level.

This is a good point I never really considered, thank you. I think you maybe onto something here that perhaps it is cultural. A lot of kids really covet being "All American", when in reality it would appear being a Jr. National champion is the goal.

He's competing at USA Nationals. Not doing summer training and getting ready for xc. No chance he even runs xc. At least be a little informed before popping off with random crap.

It is not D. Brazier's fault that too many U.S. parents allow their almost 1/2 grown sons to strut around the house, not in school until age 6. I started kindergarten at age 4, my sister started kindergarten at age 4 and I placed all my kids in kindergarten at age 4. It certainly is not D. Brazier's fault that this new kid started kindergarten at age 6.

Flatt is almost breaking records at 5mpw though.

No there is no confirmation. What I read is he now says when he claimed he did 15 miles per week he was lying. He says it is more like 5 miles a week. Well he admits he has lied about the subject so I would not take it seriously.

Present day Brazier can’t beat 19-year-old Brazier. That’s the comparison that really matters.
