Thoughts on the hire? Not surprising Caryl Smith hired him since he used to be at USC, but does seem like he also had some good results in his few years at Arizona State recently.
I live in Athens. I always assumed that UGA used 0 scholarships for distance/XC (could certainly be wrong) and it seems Caryl Smith will continue the sprint/field focus. So it seems like a very hard and unappealing job to be the distance coach at UGA. I'd love to hear more opinions on folks who are more knowledgeable.
Having coached in a D1 program where little scholarship resource was going towards distance it can be a hard job, depending on what is expected from that event area.
If a head coach provides little to no scholarship for distance and then expects the distance to score major points in Track and compete for a XC championship, then that is a recipe for disaster.
If on the other hand if the idea is to provide a few points in track and be minimally or moderately competitive in XC; then that is more doable.
If you are distance coach who likes to WIN (i.e. XC Team Championships, Major Distance points at track conference), then you need to ask yourself before agreeing to the gig if you can live with likely not competing for a XC Team championship and contributing major points on the track. If the salary is high enough, and you can live with that, then it may be a decent fit for that person.
This guy was forced resign from G’town because of a poor team atmosphere and rumors of racism. And who the hell has he coached that’s done anything in the last 5-6 years? Re-tread coaches rule the D1 ranks. 🙄🤷🏻♂️ They traded one terrible Pat (Cuniff) for another.
Pat Cuniff…so this is “barely” and upgrade. Doesn’t know the area. Hasn’t coached anyone of note in ages. Just another re-tread D1 coach. Terrible hire.
Wondering if he can convince Vinny Mauri, Dayton Carlson & Lena Lebrun from ASU to transfer even though he probably has no scholarships to work with? Maybe a NIL deal?
I mean...he's probably getting paid $150k MINIMUM to chill through the fall & only have to bother with a few men and half a dozen women during track season. And be a part of a national championship contender every year. Like another poster said, if you can make your peace with being awful in cross country & not contributing heavily to the track team's performance...life is probably pretty good otherwise. And he's had enough success through the years (Isaiah Jewett at USC most recently) that he can always jump ship whenever he wants if he needs to. Now, this is all assuming you don't mind having to live in the 3rd world. Wendel McRaven at Texas A&M, Chris Solinsky at Florida & Pete Watson at Texas seem to be living quite well having made their peace with it.
He didn’t coach Jewett to a national title that was jebreh harris. My thing is this, he left USC which means he couldn’t have been fired because why would she hire the same person she fired. If he left on his own then why? Idk just seems weird to me

Obviously. The point is that Jewett was still very successful with Pat Henner there first developing him to that point... Maybe Henner knows something is going down at ASU and wants to get out before he goes down with it? And the money is likely a lot better.

No I meant why leave USC?? Why did he leave CSG’s staff to now be back under her leadership? Why go to ASU over USC in the first place

I don't know why he left USC, but I do know that Henner wasn't fired.
Ironically Harris took over went Henner quit USC. And the only reason that Henner is even getting the Georgia job now is because Harris was offered the Georgia job last year and was going to take it, but Harris changed his mind when USC they offered him a promotion and a pay raise.
So Harris has Henner to thank for his job, and now Henner has Harris to thank for his job.
Third world? I’m no Georgia bulldog but Athens Georgia is a great college town. Please take pity on our great unwashed down here in the south. Rumor has it we will be getting indoor plumbing soon.
