Especially at the youth and high school level, this is just inappropriate. The starting tone has been around for a while. Why can't we just switch over to that completely?
I actually think it would be better if races were started with the same horn sound as in swimming. It is very distinctive and false starts are exceptionally rare.

The right is starting to get better at comedy and it's making lefties nervous.
My high school coach back in 2001 made a point to not start our XC races with a gun. He would say that he was against guns on school grounds. At the time, I thought he was just being quirky for laughs, but I still remember it and completely agree with him now. This was when Columbine was still very fresh in the minds of students and teachers.

The tone from the blocks seems like a more fair way to start, anyway, as every athlete is the same distance from their respective speaker. In a sprint race, athletes aren't looking at the gun, and they are all different distances from the starter.

Anyone who sees a starters pistol as being inappropiate needs to stay indoors that old world out there not for them.
The fence around the track reminds me of jail. I want it torn down. The women's uniforms are completely inappropriate and would never be allowed inside school so they should not be allowed on the track.

Shessh~~~
So you mean indoor track meets
Old world Olympics didn't have a starting gun.
My daughter used to keep my starting gun under her pillow thinking that a intruder wouldn't know the difference. Sometime she changed her mind and asked for a samurai sword when she got into Japanese anime. I sold the starter gun for $10 at our garage sale.

Hate to show my age, but after John Lennon was shot, the NYRRC started using an air horn to start their road races.

Gee, I hope people aren’t shooting off their guns in the middle of the stadium
