Many companies became successful because they operated like a cult. Now every company will be the same because people just log in to computer from their couch and do tasks for faceless stakeholders. Work will feel transactional. Everyone now a contractor. Therefore work quality will be that of contractors.

this is why it won't last. people like musk realize this. short term, it may not make a difference, but in the long term it definitely does.
Remote work is her to stay. It will be less than during the height of Covid but there are a lot of people that won't be going into the office as much. Companies can lease less office space when they have employees working form home. Of course, it all depends upon what type of work you are doing.

Jamin, you sound lonely. Have you tried any dating apps? Work isn’t a very good place to meet women anyway.
Most employees don't want to be in a cult. They just want a bigger paycheck so they can buy a better home and car, buy more stuff for their kids, take better vacations, or increase their chances of finding a mate.
If they can make as much without spending time sitting in traffic or on a train and have more time to go to their kids soccer matches, all the better.
"But if we work from home more often, we won't be able to fully experience the joy and value of our employers controlling every facet of our lives. Only under the constant supervision of Mr. Boss Daddy can we hope regain the happiness and comfort we once felt as newborn babes at mother's teet."

Work was always transactional.
You spend time in a company doing something the company needed to be done in order to create whatever they created. Money was exchanged because of that.
No worker ever wanted to join a cult. They just needed money to have a dry place to sleep and a feed belly.
Companies become successful because they provide something that people pay for. If a worker is getting the job done such that the company makes money, then they should get paid. If they can do that job remotely, and not from a small cubical in a certain building, then it doesn't matter where they do it from. Jamin must not have a job that makes sense to do remotely. Obviously if you're a plumber you're not doing that remotely. But if your entire job is doing something on a computer, or talking on the phone, then it doesn't matter where you are. I was just working with a coworker on something, doing a quick screen sharing session to look at some SSIS packages. I we have been working on this thing for a few days, only today did I find out that he's actually working from India right now, and only because he was finishing his work day at a different time of day than I was planning to finish. If two people can work on something together on a computer, and the other person doesn't even know that they are in a different country, then obviously it doesn't matter if they are working in a corporate building or elsewhere.
There are a lot of efficiencies with working from home. If you have to have a plumber, AC repair, etc. come out to your house, you do not miss a beat when you are working from home. If you have kids, you do not have to put them in day care and trips to the Dr., dentist, etc. are faster and easier when you just go from your home instead of having to come home, pick up your kid, go to the Dr., drop kid at daycare/school and go back to work. For me, the best part of working from home was being able to work uninterrupted without someone poking their head in my office to ask for something or to shoot the breeze.

Work can be a great place for a fella to meet Ms. Right. One needs to properly pick up on the non-verbal communication. Sexual harassment at work worked out well for Joe Scarborough!
Jamin, if you can't beat them, join them. Buy a 2 1/2 acre estate in North Bend for what you are willing to pay for 1/16 of an acre in Seattle; buy a 5 plus acre estate in Clallam County for what you are wiling to pay for 1/16th of an acre in Seattle and work from home!

My wife's company has grown from 2,000 to 8,000 people in the last five years. They have built-out their entire campus. The company is continuing to expand, and to keep from having to buy additional property for more new buildings, they are using alternating two day in-office schedules with flexible use workstations. Every employee has a laptop that can be plugged into any workstation, and at home. Company data is 100% on their cloud, no personal information allowed, no personal software allowed.
My wife says it takes little effort to setup and work. There is little clutter on desktops and no paper documents are stuck on the wall. Log into work results in personal photos (per-approved) showing up in digital photo frames, and wall "documents" appearing in a digital frame / whiteboard. When a person leaves these personal setup items all closes down.
My wife much prefers the look of the office now, as compared to the mess they had before. Creeps can no longer wander around late at night and check out personal photos of women they ogle during the day.
I'm sure people worried about the same thing when computers were starting to become common in the work place (nobody will answer their phones! Everything will be done through Email!- the horror!!), then when we all started going paperless... People adapt, things shift, but life and work go on.

Pounding on a keyboard is never going to be considered work … in a short period of time those that code will be replaced by AI …
