But they usually pick the relay runners based on how they are running in their individual events at Worlds, so Steiner would probably have to run sub 22 again in order to get picked.
The best quarter milers on the US women's side are all collegiate runners (Britton, Talitha, SImons, Holmes, etc). But they have been running a long season already. Interesting who shows up to really run at US Nationals in a week and a half.
It does mean something. It takes a good plan and coaching to navigate it, but it does mean something. There are athletes that have succeeded, medaled, etc, but it definitely is "something". The athletes that have higher aspirations take it into account more than those whose primary focus is NC's. If it was not a thing, every pro would have huge indoor seasons with frequent competitions which is not that case.
A fresh steiner, in her own lane, and not having to pass 3 runners can prob do low 49 in the open 400. There might be 5-6 other women in the world who can do that and they aren't all from the usa.

The USA can do whtever they want, hell we have brought 4x1 teams to the Olympics just to run the relay, none of our 100m cats on the team. We have ran a college team in Tennessee State. In 1964 200m stud Henry Carr simply gets assigned our 4x4 anchor duties, he didn't run the 400m trials.

Comparing your self to the elites of world 🤔 not a good look. Gotta remember people recover differently and USAs is whole different animal to conquer. Peep Carri after 10.75 didn't make the team, Brazier 1:43 didn't even make the final. Now there are exceptions like Athing last year or Trayvon/Andre when they came out of college, but it's no guarantee Abby can hold form all the way to Worlds. She just peaked for these championships, so now she gotta hold that peak for another 5 weeks is what you're essentially saying.

OK, I looked it up. It happened for the US on the men's side in 1912 and 1932. Those seem to be the only times the US had a 4x100m relay in the Olympics that did not have any of the open 100m competitors on it.
