Aregawi only third. Do you think the Ethiopian federation will let anyone double? If he just focuses on the 5000m would they let Kejelcha on the 10,000m team?
Nice. Anywhere to watch full race. Tough for Kejelcha to be beaten by 3 studs (Worku trains with him). Did Gebrhiwet race? And now with Yomif needing a time at the 5k that Rome race is going to be very quick (he’s run 12:53 on the roads).
Based on today’s results at the Ethiopian trials in Hengelo, the top three finishers (Selemon Barega, Tadese Worku and Berihu Aregawi) will represent Ethiopia in the men’s 10000m at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene (July 2022).
Aregawi can produce equally well over 5 or 10 (4th in Tokyo 10k), so I honestly could not say. I'd rate him as behind Cheptegei and Barega at both distances, and level with Kiplimo at 10k / Ahmed at 5k.
I'm not sure when the ETH 5000m trials would be -- Rome could serve as a great preview, considering it would be Barega v Kejelcha, Aregawi, Edris, and Kiplimo + Kipruto for reference points.

My understanding is trials for the 10000m as there aren't many good ones and conditions so key. Rest of selection is done purely on season best time. Apparently they will consider doubles in some circumstances but still not super keen on it.
I doubt the double is on the table. Barega mentioned his desire to double early this year, but...
Plus, Muktar Edris has the 5000m wildcard which complicates things. He ran 7:30 last year but has become a part time road racer
The ETH federation has some tough choices ahead
My apologies for apparently deleting the thread. I tried to delete the first post as they were linking to the wrong tweet and it apparently deleted the thread. Now it's back up.
1) Yes Edris has a bye but Aregawi could also have the bye as he was the DL winner last year. If Ethiopia is smart, Edris doesn't show and Aregawi takes the bye.
2) Since there is no DL 10,000, shouldn't the reigning Olympic champ be given a bye. That would make things a lot easier. I know that's not the rule but that should be the rule, then they could take all 4.
3) It makes no sense for Ethiopia to pick the 5,000 - which is often a tactical race bye time. I'd love to see a DL race hold a 5,000 unrabbitted and let Ethiopia use that as their Trials.
4) I really hope they let people double and encourage it.

Only third?
Top three make the team. Didnt need to win unless they dont allow doubling like the Olympics, like you said.
Make no mistake, Aregawi is #1 on 3000 and 5000 this year.
For 10000 it s a toss up, but it was very close and he let go when he saw he would make top 3. 1 2 and 3 finished basically in the same time so I would not read too much into that except that they all 3 can deliver 26'45" on a non time trial race.
I don t see more than a couple people being on par (Kiplimo, Cheptegei, Fisher and Ahmed being a few seconds behind).
Four men under 26:50 is terrifying depth. All four can also drop a 52/53 final lap off that sort of pace. I can only see Cheptegei being able to compete with them this year.
I would also try and persuade Aregawi into the 5000 and allow Kejelcha into the 10000. I think that would give Ethiopian a stronger overall team. We still don't know if Aregawi will be a strong championship competitor but Kejelcha has raced well in the big events
It's the outdated "three per nation" rule that is the problem. Maybe it made sense back in the day when travelling to champs to weeks and were costly for smaller nations. It has far outlived that by now.
EVERYONE that has gone sub 27 this year should be in the WC 10000. Imagine if the Superbowl had a "three players per US state max" rule. The IAAF is killing T&A.

Stupid analogy - if that is the case then the pro bowl teams should be in the Superbowl.
Worlds and Olympics are still Country (Team) organized competitions. They pay the freight (with subsidies from WA). That is not likely to change anytime soon.

Agree totally. It's grossly unfair to individual athletes that happen to be American, Ethiopian, Kenyan, etc. I'm surprised nobody has challenged it in court yet.
