I caught up with a confident Cooper Teare this afternoon in Eugene. Near the middle of the interview, I LOVED this excerpt:
"At the end of the day, it’s a competition and I want to win. I’m just going to go out and race like I always have, go to the font a little bit, & make sure I stick my nose into it and give myself a shot rather than being scared of the competition and maybe drifting to the back a little bit.... There’s no reason I shouldn’t be in it going for a title."

Big respect if he does what he says and goes with the pace. There's no triumph in being the guy that kicks from 11th to 6th in the final 100. Get in there, test yourself and test other people

While I’m sure Jakob always wanted to win, he was actually the guy who would run his own race and hang at the back of elite races when he was younger. He showed great ability to pace himself and not go with the front runners before he was ready to (for example when he ran 3:56 at Pre when he was 16), similar to when Webb ran 3:53. Big respect if he goes with the pace and hangs on, but if he goes too hard early or pulls a Webb in 2005 WCs and flounders in then that’s just dumb racing since part of your task is to know your capabilities in a given setting.

100%. I feel they do a bad job in knowing their competition. There is no shame in having a goal to be top 5, rather than to give it all and try to win, only to burn out and place 8. Its about being realistic of your capabilities vs the ones you are racing.

I have a bad memory I wish I could remember who won the ncaa 5000m title with a meet record time and then went straight back to Hayward to narrowly miss the Olympic team.

I feel like you're talking about Cooper Teare as if he's some naive novice. He obviously knows who the competition is, he hasn't been living under a rock for the past 2 years. He knows as much about the Ingebrigstens and Cheruiyots of the running world as we do, the difference is he's a 3:50 miler to go along with it. He ran 3:50 indoors, soloed a 3:53 outdoors a few weeks ago, so it's entirely conceivable he could run 3:47-3:49 outdoors at Hayward today. Do you think a potential 3:47 miler shouldn't be thinking about winning? It's absurd how quickly people jump on an athlete's back for saying that they want to win...the entire nature of the sport is to push yourself and aspire to reach higher standards. No 3:50 miler should go into any race without even entertaining the idea of winning, absolutely embarrassing mentality...
