Cade Flatt joins us to discuss just missing the 800m high school record of 1:46.45 at the NYC Qualifier, how he trains, his mentality, why he's going to Ole ...
Apparently, he'll be 20 in late May 2023. If you think a 1:46.51 800m guy who has run 4:12 on 12 mpw cannot go sub 4 within two months, you know nothing about the sport. At Ole Miss, he'll be running in the mid to high 3:30s next year. Mark it down. It will happen.

IF you think he is running 4:12 on 12 mow YOU know nothing about the sport. What I see is an attention seeking and very talented runner who will say just about anything to get the aforementioned attention.

Apparently I know nothing about the sport, because I dont think he can go sub 4 in two months.
Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but 12 seconds is a lot to drop in 2 months, especially in an event that's not his main focus. If the 12 mpw figure is even accurate, it makes it less likely, not more. It's not like he's going to suddenly double his mileage at the end of a long racing season and immediately make huge endurance gains. Gains from mileage accumulate over time.
I'm sure they'll work his mileage up gradually over his time at Ole Miss and he'll be very successful at the 15 if he so desires, I just don't see it happening this year.

Unless he’s the next Ovett, those extreme fast-twitch muscles of his will hinder him in the mile. I would be surprised if after 2 months of specific training, he could manage 4:05.
I would be really surprised if he doesn't break 4 next indoor season after 4 months at Ole Miss. I think he will be really challenged by running with people who are better than him. I expect a Brazier like freshman improvement with the competition from talented teammates.

"Extreme fast twitch muscles" reach exhaustion after 1-3 contractions. Fast twitch muscles are what you use when you're throwing the shot or doing the high jump, not when you're running the 800m.

Who, at Ole Miss, is going to be faster than Flatt at 800m?
This guy is so easy not to like. He comes off as such a huge dbag and just needs to stfu. I was sick of him long ago. It has nothing to do with being a hater because of his accomplishments. There are plenty of guys a lot better than he is that are likable.

A 400/800m runner is significantly more slow-twitch than a 800/1500 guy. A good comp for Flatt is Granville and there’s no way he could have ever broken 4:00 in HS, if ever.

He's Everett Smulders II with more talent at 800 and less talent at 1500/mile. There are plenty of other guys and gals I would rather follow. I will not waste my time paying attention to this clown.

I find him (and the current trend of glorifying boastful arrogance) very off-putting, but it seems like a stretch to say that there are "plenty of guys a lot better." Not at the high school level.
Disliking how someone carries themselves doesn't mean you have to downplay their accomplishments.

Fast twitch muscles are for a very small number of maximal contractions (shot put, long jump, triple jump, etc.). Slow twitch muscles are for posture for long periods of time (this is what allows you to sit upright in a chair without your torso becoming exhausted).
Between "fast twitch" and "slow twitch" exists a whole spectrum of intermediate muscle fiber types. These are (in part) what make the difference between being a 400/800 guy and being a 800/1500 runner or a 1500/5K runner or a marathoner.
Sure, Flatt is made to be a 400/800 guy, but it isn't because of his ratio of fast twitch to slow twitch muscles. These two muscle types are essentially irrelevant to a runner's performance. It's (in part) a matter of his specific composition of intermediate muscle fibers.
