Should NCAA Conf/Regional/Nat'l meets make a 1500m/10000m double doable?

No this is dumb. Hassan only did that in 2019 bc the schedule made it hard to do the 5k/10k double. The 5k/10k or 1500/5k double makes way more sense, and no one should be tripling 15/5/10 at conference meets. Also conference meets are already bloated, adding in an extra day would be ridiculous.

what even is the range of good 10k times these past few years in D1? believe me I have looked up threads before and never gotten a solid answer.

Swap the 10,000m for the 3,000m. 10k is too long for spectators, and is almost the same energy system as the 5000m so its redundant anyway. 3000m provides a more consistently close finish.

It used to be 3000/5000 for the women. I remember watching Pattie Sue Plummer run both distances at the 1986 TAC and it seemed pretty dumb as those distances are very similar to me.

For Men, sub-30 is decent, sub-29 very good. For Women, call sub-35 good, sub-34 very good, sub-33 and yr eyeing the podium at Nats.

I wasn't aware the Doha '19 event schedule was the driving force for Hassan choosing the 10 over the 5. I just thought she did it for the sheer novelty of the double and to demonstrate her range.

I see the silliness of the four-day idea on the Conf level. For Nats, I think it could work if the NCAA packaged and sold the final 10K as a special event, like a standalone summer equivalent to XC Nats. The camera coverage, commentary, buildup, etc. would have to be excellent and enough of the top distance athletes would have to consider the 1500/10K a big deal.

Actually the 10k / 5k is doable in 2019. The 1500 / 5k finals was on the same day. Hassan became a legend by choosing to do the 1500 over the 5k.

Dunno about a 10/3 swap, but the tediousness and redundancy of the 10 are valid points. I commented in another post on how to make the 10 more appealing to spectators. I couldn't guess to what degree a typical competitive D1 runner distinguishes btwn a 15/5 and a 15/10, but I think polling a significant number of these athletes would be worthwhile, something along the lines of "Would you prefer the option to run a 15/10 double over a 15/5 double at Nats?"

Perhaps, but the 15/10 could become a more compelling problem to solve for the emerging generation of top performers that strives to compete across what in the past would be considered an “outrageous” range. Hassan, Kiplimo & I’brigtsen are emblematic in this respect. Shouldn’t the NCAA encourage development of similar skills and aptitude?
