My personal bests before this eight week training cycle: Back Squat (325lbs), Bench Press (235lbs), Deadlift (440lbs). I was able to set HUGE new personal be...
He is strong, I didn't say I would beat him up, I said what would happen if we fought and I was banned for that. And of course if I fought I'd prepare for it and be much stronger than I am now.
This is very impressive. Good for Symmonds. His squat had great depth at over 1.85x body weight and his deadlift was over 2.25x, great for someone who’s only recently gotten seriously into powerlifting.
Depends on the lifter. 5%? 10%? It doesn't matter. It's like asking how many seconds does running in shoes help a runner. You lift in whatever is allowed.
I would like to see him do more of a low bar squat. He would move more weight that way, in theory.
For reference, the best raw PLers are putting up 2x his numbers. Good for him for competing though.
The PL Bench takes getting used to because of the slight pause at the chest.
This guy looks pretty strong. I can't believe Greg was posting about being able to beat this guy up just a few days ago.

You once said that you feared getting into a fight with somebody who wasn't smaller than you, because of the potential for getting hurt. The only fight you've had in your life was with your poor dog. Now you're bragging online about being able to beat up an Alpha Male Olympic stud who turns to powerlifting in his forties and is clearly doing very well.

He's not seriously into powerlifting. His training was not properly planned and included many of his fitness challenge diversions that he wouldn't do if he was focused on the meet. He showed up without proper equipment and was lucky to borrow a singlet. You want to do your weigh in and equipment check as quickly and smoothly as possible so you can go relax and eat. He hadn't practiced the rules and commands. He didn't bring a coach who had seen his training efforts and could choose better weight selections at the meet.
I doubt he's interested in taking it more seriously given all his pursuits.

You have never prepared for anything. You would get beat up by 90% of the posters here.

Eh, its the lifting equivalent of a 20 min 5k, maybe not even that. When we took into account that he does steroids its not so much.
Symonds has built a YouTube fan base of kids and nonrunners now and has hit it off pretty good. That's huge. He needs to collect the dough while he still can though because youtube fame is short lived.

Yea, looks like he did this on a lark. His singlet looked too big. To the uninformed he looks like he's actually competing. I mean he did say he was 3rd place at some point. But these PL meets are so ridiculously top heavy you could have a guy in third with a 1100 total and first at 2000+ and have only a handful of guys at any wt class.
He's a fitness buff with a youtube channel. He's not that strong by fitness youtuber standards, nor that fast anymore.

he is doing it as a stepping stone to the 500lb deadlift sub 5:00 mile challenge
Female weighing 184 lifting a good 200-300lbs more total than Symmonds.
All of the males in his weight class are a good 700+ pounds above him in total.
He could probably put 20lbs on his squat by going low bar, assuming he can still get PL depth.
His Bench looks narrow, but thats just me. I doubt he's putting much effort in trying to figure out how to actually lift the most weight by adjusting his grip width. I also don't see much arch or leg drive, +10-20lbs there easy.
He seems built well for the DL. When he stands up his knuckles are even with the bottom of his junk. Watch people Deadlift and notice how long their arms are. Those with arms in relation to their torso will pull mountains. The sumo pullers tend to be lighter or have shortish arms. I am built like a T-Rex but I pull conventional because Sumo feels slow as heck off the floor. My explosiveness is nil!

Incorrect. He is doing it for YT views. It just appears it is a stepping stone. He knows he won't do 500/5:00 unless he roids.
He probably cant go sub 5:00 at the bodyweight he needed (185?) to pull 450. Again just me, but he stayed down there far too long before pulling. 50 more pounds is a lifetime at his age and experience.
