Incredible. I follow him on strava. He runs incredibly slow (9:00, 10:00, sometimes 11:00-15:00/mile) most of the time. Then when he does a workout, it looks like it's fartleks, most of the time. Beat the Legend Ed Whitlock by 4 seconds. I still give Ed the edge since all his running was pre-super shoes and he kept breaking world records for more than 15 years.
But my hat's off to Jo Schoonbroodt. Great performance! And thank you for showing us it can be done.
Correction: Broke *Gene Dykes' record (who broke Ed Whitlock's record).
I’m confused . The article says the record was “shattered.” It was broken by 4 seconds. Is that shattering? Sure, over 1500m that would be shattering. But a marathon? The article also notes he was paced( and likely aided) by a bicycle. Surely this is against the rules. Great run. Great athlete. But he didn’t shatter any record. H2H In Jacksonville and Gene beats this guy.
86 miles per week in 2021
Wow! Yeah, got it by 4 seconds. What's so impressive is that he did it just four weeks after racing Rotterdam. He recovers quick for 71. Congrats to Jo!
These guys, first Ed, then Gene, and now Jo are so inspiring. They show us older guys in our 40s and 50s that it doesn't have to end anytime soon.
super shoes conversion = add about 6 minutes to the marathon time
When someone wearing super shoes breaks a record...the old record should still be recognized until the mark is bested by about 6 minutes (in my opinion).
or they could take off the super shoes and show us how fast they really are.
I made it a point to emphasize that he edged the record by mere seconds. I also agree that Ed's records deserve a special merit being in the pre-super shoe era, not only for racing benefits but for training as well. Ed to me is the GOAT supersenior along with Earl Fee.
Nonetheless it is great to see how competitive the M70 category can be in a day when most people of that age are, shall we say far from fit.
Anyone know what kind of times he ran in his 30s and 40s? It looks like he started at 36 but was slow and maybe didn't take it as serious as he does now. Still, I would expect someone of this caliber to put up some decent times in their 40s even with less than full effort.
I believe Whitlock would have temporary bursts of training in his younger days and ran a very respectable 2:31 at 48.
His Strava lists PBs of 2:41, 1:14:56, 34:35 but not the age at the times.
i don’t mean to detract from this wonderful effort and the record is rightfully his but I feel like here more than anywhere a distinction needs to be made between pre and post super shoes.
Seeing how only four 70+ runners have run under 3 at all, it's a pretty big deal even though you come across as a snotty and negative naysayer, typical of letsrun.com.
Most people in their 70's can't even walk a mile in 15 minutes.
That's how incredible these performances are.
“I only started jogging at 36 because my doctor told me I had highcholesterol,” he says, chuckling. “But last year I ran 7,242 kilometres [4,450 miles], which is more than double what I did in my car.”
That's 12 miles a day!

Similar training to Whitlock in that Ed jogged high mileage but raced frequently, often weekly for speedwork. Jo does fartleks and races for speed while most of his high mileage is "jogging."
Letsrun: don't you ever change.
This is fantastic and not some one-off fluke: He’s broken 3 hours in the marathon 76 times! It will take some time to get this one ratified. Looks like he is sponsored by Asics. Good for him and them! It looks like he’s just getting starting in setting world records. I looked him up in the world and single-age masters world records and I guess it will take some time for his records to start showing up. Not to diminish his accomplishments in any way but if you do a similar lookup on Ed Whitlock, you will find he has an astounding 110 world and single-age records. I think folks forget just how amazing Ed was.
But, relatively speaking, he’s still young, and will no doubt grab a number of these records. I list them below, just so we don’t forget Ed too soon….

“With a few miles remaining, he knew he was just ahead of the previous best, set by Gene Dyckes in 2018, because a friend was following him on his bike and barking out his lap times.”
Um, this is Assistance.
So guys are faster than the GOAT - Ed Whitlock?
Is there a website that age grades all these old timers?
