Live in Indy, big running fan, and had no idea idea the USATF championships and an American record attempt were happening

Same. I live in Central Indiana and had no idea this was going down. Not to mention USATF being headquartered in Indy. Seems like there could have been more promotion. I didn't realize it until I saw someone's Strava post after the race.

Same. I live in Indy and would have loved to head downtown to watch had I known. Pretty frustrating.

Did anyone watch the race on local television and did they say anything about it? I took a camping trip but might have stuck around and caught the race if I knew there were top runners showing up.

They added this event just 5 weeks ago, and one week before the 25km championships. They offered only $535 of travel costs (lodging, airfare, food) per athlete. With the high airfare costs, and limited hotels available due to most rooms having been booked for Mini-Indy, it just shows that to the USATF, they don't give a crap about long distance running.

I'd blame USATF, but you live in Indiana. Seriously, what the hell else is going on when it's not basketball season or they're filming Breaking Away?

Your title says it all. Hobby joggers are not true fans of the sport.

I saw it on here when people started complaining about the short notice. But I have been surprised there was no local info about it. I have a USATF membership and thought about jumping for fun, but was informed that was an elite only competition up front. I'm not an elite runner by any stretch.

What, should USATF staffers have gone around knocking on every hobby jogger’s door in the tri-county area to promote the event? Either you’re involved with the local running scene or you aren’t, for fox sake.

The actual participants weren't that elite either. Some local sub elites, especially in the women's race, could have placed top 10 if they knew to enter or were allowed to enter.

I live in Indy, on the northside. You could run a marathon down the Monon, which I can see from my house, and I wouldn't know about it unless I read about it first on letsrun.com.

Come on, the USATF stinks at advertising their own races! You would think that with the internet, social media, running web sites like Let’s Run, running YouTube channels, and local running stores, that National offices and the state chapters would be blasting their the race announcements every where. However, the USATF lives in a vacuum and only does a minimal pre-race advertising. A lot of times, USATF members only know about championship races if they go directly to the USATF National page or the chapter pages. I don’t really blame the chapters, because it is a volunteer organization with a limited budget and time, but you would think that National office could have better race production.
