Thanks for posting that. Amazing win. The speed of Rich Strike in the stretch is remarkable.

That was good but I like the girl that fell down in that indoor track meet that got back up to win.
Dave Wottle
The announcing is unreal. To flawlessly be able to see all 20 horses and name them is crazy. Here is a video of the track announcer (not the NBC which is what you are hearing above) broadcasting the same race.
And here is a video on how he does it.
Yes, amazing win! Don’t forget about Kendall Ellis coming from way behind in the 4x4 to win the NCAA team championship for USC:

Physically yes thats an amazing comeback. But the horse is not trying to win in the same way a person is. The horse doesn't even know the finish line. I'm just not moved in the same way I would be if people were racing on foot, bike or even by car.
That was really incredible when seeing it live but I only really noticed Rich Strike as he moved into 5th. The overhead view shows that it was much more incredible than I had realized.
Someone above mentioned Wottle. His run didn't make him weave through much traffic and part of the explanation for his apparent incredible last 200 was that the leaders ran the second lap slower than the first so part was Dave keeping pace or maybe even faster on the second lap and the leaders slowing. (Note that it's common to run the first lap faster in 800s. I know you know that but maybe newer visitors don't.)
In today's Derby, they went by the first 1/2 mile in a very fast time and I noted the third quarter dropped pace significantly. I wonder how much of what we saw was the leaders slowing vs Rich Strike kicking hard. (And I wonder how horse races are usually paced.)
Regardless, the entire race was very exciting today.
Leaders in Thoroughbred horse races often positive split. The issue with laying off the early pace is positioning, bumping and route chosen. Circling wide is called, Taking the married man route. Leon, jockey of Rick Strike found a route near the rail. The rail route opened due to so many Taking the married man route.

Yeah, that is absolutely insane. 80-1 who just had a 5-race losing streak, and yet that horse mounts that kind of comeback from far back and with all that traffic? Unbelievable.
Got chills watching that.

2006 Tour De France: Stage 17
Doped to the gills. Horse racing = animal abuse
With how the race finished and the announcer's call, I immediately thought of the Billy Mills race
Reid Buchanan and Des Linden rip Eliud Kipchoge on twitter - "Give me a break"
Am I the only one that thinks Nuguse AR is as suspect as the women's marathon WR?
Oh the irony. What if it turns out the new $500 adidas shoe is just way better than Nike's?
How to tell my athlete he did "meh" when he thinks he did great
