Jeff Merrill who is one of the people who runs the meet said the race is paced at 3:32. Current NCAA record is 3:33. Yared will have many guys better than him in this race that will help push him in those last two laps.
What are your thoughts? Could Yared shock the world yet again?
Yeah but he also hasnt raced since that race 2 months ago, and we are nearing the end of the season. So would have to imagine he was dealing with some kind of setback (injury/sickness). Would be pretty surprised if he came back and immediately broke the NCAA record in his first race.
I hope it happens. He has the talent to do it. But since he hasn't raced in a while and wasn't in top form at NCAA indoors, after running a 7:38 3k college record earlier, you have to think there'll be some bounce back races before he really goes for time qualifiers and records.

My question for the OP is who are these “many guys better than him in this race”? It seems like if he’s in top form he can mix it up with any of these guys (though I’d rank Jake Heyward #1 of the field I see listed).

Yes, Jake Heyward is the only guy who I'd favor over Nuguse, if Nuguse is fit. I will say Sam Tanner was very impressive at Drake (slow time but super windy). Interested to see how he goes, but if all three guys are fit and the pacing goes as planted I'd anticipate those 3 all under 3:34.5.

I dont think the world is shocked by a 3:33 by a 22 year old.

I’ll interpret it as you seeing two foreign-born NCAA runners with 3:34 1500 PBs and thinking that because one is on a disappointing trajectory, you can be dismissive of the other because he’s virtually the same guy. Makes no sense. Sam Tanner ran 3:34.7i at 20 years old last year. Give him a minute before you decide he’ll be a bust.
