He or she is likely taking issue with the fact that most of us do in fact pay for our health care indirectly through taxes. Although that is true, arguably the people that cannot afford to pay for health care (either directly or indirectly) do in fact get it for free (or at least at a very reduced rate). It is not unlike running in a public park. Most of us think of it as "free" even though somebody did indeed pay for the park and its upkeep.
Accordingly, I should restate: if being irrelevant means all the stuff I said before (with the caveat that by "free healthcare" I mean, "it is as accessible and as free as using public parks and roadways"), then bring it on.
USA has free healthcare as well. People who show up in the ER and have no insurance get free healthcare and then the rates of people who do have health insurnace see the rates go sky high. Also people who live below certain poverty levels established by states get medicaid which is free to them. It is paid for by taxes. What Canada has done is just bring it out in the open and gives its citzens basic human rights. Only here in the States is healthcare considered a privledge. Medicaid doctors are not as good as regular docs in this area. The reason the USA has the health insurnace issue is the powerful health insurnace lobby which I am a part of. What the USA should do is establish a national healthcare plan then contract out to insurnace companies who can do it cheaper and more effecifly then the huge goverment. Americans who say it cant work are wrong..
Chavez, Castro, obrador (imminent), Lula, Kirchner, Pj patterson in jamaica plus a cdn government that has a majority governed by the left (liberals, ndp and bloc) and the trend seems to be that social democracy is taking root and its the American hypercapitalism model might be the one that needs tinkering in this hemisphere...
