I don't think they thought that. Between them & the NP kids we've all learned, if we didn't know it already, that attempting records where you're alone for most of the race is very challenging.
Splits /report card Splits: Matt Wisner – 3:59.69. A If you told me he'd run 3:59, I'd tell you they would get tthe record as his PBbefore this weekend was 3:42. James West – 4:01.82 C The dude has a 3:34 pb which is equivalent to 3:51.6. SO he's 6+ seconds off his pb. Cole Hocker - – 3:57.31 D+ This 1500 pb equates to 3:48. 9 seconds off. Cooper Teare – 3:53.24 3 seconds off pb. B+ Gave it a bit of scare. Totalt: 15:52.05
Teare might be getting displaced from the 1500 because of his proximity to Cole Hocker. Sort of like Ritz from the 1500/1600/Mile due to Webb and the half marathon/marathon success of Hall in 2007-08. Ritz lost to Webb at 10000 around that time and didnt revisit the track for some time afterward.
This was a mistake.
I think when Hocker is in shape and on his A-game he can get to a next gear that makes him tough to beat down the stretch.
But during the pandemic Teare was running sub-4s in practice. I think that is a showcase of his talent. In fact, I think Teare is such a good runner that he helped provide the platform thT catapulted Hocker to success. Teare is a very stable runner and he has beaten Hocker before on big stages several times now in that 1500-mile range. It might be time for him to revisit the 1500/mile as his main event because he is also that good.
And also the US runners need to adopt a better menality about being beaten. It's like some of these people think they have to move up after a single loss. That's not how racing works. Leo then Centro in the 1500 plus Nick Symmonds at the 800 were lucky to have long lasting reigns.

Good on you for doing the work but Teare deserves at least an A. Pretty sure his split was the fastest in 4xmile history, as the fastest Penn Relays split of all time is 3:55.6 and the best split in the WR was 3:55.3.
Given the ~5+ second per leg penalty of running solo, everyone had to basically run to their potential to get the record, and it didn't happen. I think the On team will beat it next week.
Teare is really growing on me; far more so than Hocker. Teare just always throws down, and today another example. They had no business being near the record when he got the baton and he made it close to the end. Great run.

If West’s pb equivalent is 3:51 and he ran 4:01, isn’t that 10 secs off his PB, not 6?
Who is on the On team? Ollie Geordie Klecker and ? Dathan. lol. he is good for 4:00
I quickly added up the PBs the other day and had Oregon team about 2 seconds up in terms of 1500/mile pbs but it was clsoe.
Oliver Hoare,332/351 Jonas Raess 337/1305 747 indoors George Beamish 336 this year./1312 Joe Klecker337.00/ never actually broken 400 in a mile
I'm still surprised Oregon didn't get it. THe biggest difference between Penn and Oregon isn't the quality of the teams - it's the weather. It was very still in Oregon tonight. Penn is often windy although not to bad at night.

West technically ran a 3:53 indoors, that's what i figured the poster was referencing.
Hopefully after this silly stunt Teare and Hocker can stop chasing obscure records and running no stakes time trials and actually do some real racing to prove their place on the world stage.

Joe Klecker ran a 3:58 mile against Olli in a time trial in Colorado -
goal was to be the first person to break 4 in the mile in Coloradothe race was at 5000ft the NCAA would probably convert it to like 3:49 or something (don’t ...

I’m dubious, since he didn’t apply that same rule to Hocker, and that would still be 8+ seconds, not 6. I just think he made a weird error.
Some posters have referred to James West as a “no-name,” or said they’d never heard of him. My question is what’s wrong with James West? I’m not trying to be a hater—yeah, I know I was never that fast. But this is a guy who ran 3:34 2x in 2020, and now he’s a 4-flat miler. I guess it’s just harder than we fans realize to remain at that level.

Everyone was so focused on Wisner being the weak link leading up to this, but who would have known it was West all along. All of us have off days but I suppose it is worse when yours is magnified by essentially causing your team to lose out on a world best. On the other hand, they were all a bunch of baby ducklings by setting this up as a time trial instead of racing so maybe I am quite content with the fact that they came up a bit short.
