Mistake winter of 10th grade is I let time get away from me. I came off a 16:26 on a "legit 5k" at state (read not Mississippi, Indiana, New Mexico etc.), season best 16:14 on faster course. I had probably a bit of a stress fracture brewing, decided to take off November and unfortunately never started back up. Before you knew it, it was the season and I quickly raced myself in shape but then we hit outdoor and I was in a slump where it was hard to break 2:10. Then that same barrier became 4:40 in May. Just couldn't hold on without the base. I was constantly tired, leaving good performances in workouts and not having it race day. I think I potentially missed a low 4:20 as a soph and who knows what confidence wouldve stemmed from that. Sophomore year is important if you want to be a state title contender as a senior. I shouldve been vying for a state qualifier and perhaps picking off a single point (8th) at state. Instead, me and my mini Winter gut was on the sidelines for that one.
