Sounded crazy to me at first as Tuohy just got 2nd at NCAA so in my mind she'd crush Cook. But Cook's pr is 15:25 for 5000, Tuohy 15:30. Someone try and tell me Cook would win. I just don't see it so I guess I'm saying PRs aren't everything.
Well in my eyes Cook wins in cross country because she has more mental toughness than Tuohy. But then again, Tuohy has more physical muscle and muscley people are better up hills...
High schooler Natalie Cook just ran 15:25.93 to set the national high school track and field 5000m record. Former high school star and NCAA runner-up Katelyn...
The track and field action is picking back up and the Boston Marathon is less than 2 weeks away and Kenenisa Bekele won't be there, but team New Balance with Sydney McLaughlin, Elle Purrier St Pierre, Heather MacLean, and hig...
There’s a difference between racing and time trialing. Tuohy is more seasoned at this point and has learned how to close out races with a big finish. Her PB is probably gonna go down a lot if she aims to hit a fast 5k.
Rather than speculate, why not just be patient and wait until next academic year, or perhaps the year after, when there is a chance they will race against each other?
It is not that hard a question. Going into the race at indoor nationals 11 of the 16 participants had better lifetime PRs than KT and 15 had run faster this season. Did not help them at all. KT was able to run with Wayment and Chelangat who have lifetime PRs under 15:20. Plus you have to look at whether a race is tactical or not. A 15:30 in a race where you had 200m splits as high as 42 seconds is an excellent time and indicates a high PR potential. I thought her race at the ACC championship was the best she ever looked up to that point based on how she closed regardless of the final time. That 15:41 in a slow developing race was more impressive to me than her faster high school record race. Winning in the NCAAs depends on closing speed.
Based on degree of difficulty (solo effort vs. pacers and drafting until the finish line, 200m track vs. 400m track, etc) I thought Tuohy's 15:37 was the most impressive of the recent record runs. I think Hutchins and Cooks races were more comparable given that Hutchins had to run the final half of the race from the front. The fact that KT was 15 is an bonus.
I thought if Katelyn ran the 5000 at Boston and not the 3000 she would have broken 15:20 there and taken the U20 in the 5000. Right now I think she can run 15:10-15 in a fast race, and possibly below 15:10 if she got into a pro race and was being pulled along. Not going to happen though. She will get a qualifying time and try to win the 5000 outdoors in another tactical race.
no question tuohy wins. 15:15 is probably a worse case scenario for her current fitness.
And turning 19 in May is very old for a hs senior. take nothing away from cook. her time is impressive for a college freshman as well. but kids turning 19 in HS is pretty darn rare, and makes a real difference when you are talking about "age group" type records.
oh for gods sake... is this the wet dream thread for the Tuohy stans to officially attack the anti Tuohy trolls without taking over every thread where a fast high school female is mentioned? Because EVERY thread about Natalie Cook or Jenna Hutchins or you name any high school female within shouting distance of one of her records without fail becomes a food fight where members of Team Tuohy tie themselves into knots explaining why this particular time isnt actually that impressive compared to what Tuohy did and for the Tuohy haters to gleefully provoke them with absurd statements about how mediocre Tuohy has become since her junior year in high school or some such nonsense. Well a pox on all of you I say. Let Cook graduate and then you can have your actual real match up at some point. In the mean time lets acknowledge greatness in the moment without equivocating or trying to asterisk away an incredible time. Am I the only one here who thinks both these kids are incredible?
I am posting this from a proxy because I have been banned from these forums for life. I tried to post earlier today and received a message to the effect of "please don't spam these forums." That is hilarious because I have never tried to spam these forum and even if I wanted to, I have nothing to spam them with! When I try to post now, I get this message:
"You have been banned from posting. (Ban expires: never.)"
That's too funny and not really a great loss. This place is a cesspool anyway. I guess if I want to post, I'll just use a proxy.
Anyway, to address Green sEggs and Sham, how is Cook more mentally tough than Tuohy? How are you qualifying that statment? Tuohy is pretty damn tough, mentally. I would like you to back up your statement with an inteligible statment.
Both are extremely talented and hopefully neither of them reads these forums.
honestly, stop using a pic of her wearing a kit from a school she has never run for. brojos have been in this sport how many years now and still don't understand this?
Huh? We don't cover a lot of high school meets but why aren't we supposed to use this photo? Do you work for a rival college? It's one she purposely put out on her social media.
Why don't they just race each other and find out? It is impossible to say. One of them could have a bad day or twist an ankle and then the one that just stays upright wins.
These hypotheticals are dumb because even if one is significantly faster than the other the faster one could pull a muscle.
Are you claiming that being 14 months younger makes her faster than Tuohy? Are you claiming that being older is an advantage? Tuohy is 14 months older whole Cook is faster. Imagine what she will do in a year or 2.

also, let me remind you that katelyn tuohy ran 15:30 in a fartlek race with laps being 70-80s mostly .. can you imagine the time if that was not a fartlek?? a 15:15 would be easy on that race with ncaa champs
Then why point out that Tuohy lapped someone who had a faster PR? You make these mistakes frequently. You try to negate something by using the very same logic regarding Tuohy. I have seen you do this dozens of times.
