I recommend shedding all sense of reality and nevertheless engaging in speculation about weather and whether Bekele, as in the abstract concept of him, might break the world record, place sixth, or DNF.

This was beyond predictable. How can Bekele still be in the GOAT conversation with the rash of DNS and DNFs late in his career? I understand his track success blows Kipchoge out of the water, but his marathon career was one blip on the radar.

Consistency has to count for something.

Lebron is the GOAT because he didn't gamble his life away and get forced to take a year away from basketball and contribute to the death of his father. He simply puts up 27 a game on incredible efficiency. MJ finished as an owner player for the WIzards.

Nothing Bekele does now detracts from what he did in the past. Every recent DNS does not cancel out a prior global medal or world record. He remains the goat until another runner affirmatively and positively accomplishes more. You become the goat by addition, while the current goat can’t lose the status by subtraction. All that being said, I wish he would “officially retire,” even if he continues to race, so we would not keep experiencing these cycles of disappointment and we could properly mark and celebrate his unmatched career.

DNS means the race already happened.

LeClown isn't even in top 5. Kipchoge is goat in marathon, but as a distance runner Bekele and Geb way ahead. A bunch of DNS make no difference.
