The kid should be prosecuted just like Will Smith. It’s amazing how many people are cool with someone hitting someone else and facing absolutely no repercussions from the legal system.
Our system of criminal law was set up for JUST THIS REASON. Our country wastes so much time and money trying to prosecute drug crimes that it has no ability or interest in prosecuting someone that actually inflicts violence on another person in front of hundreds or millions in Will Smith’s case.
As a parent if this happened to my child I am not going to sugar coat it I think I would probably let my emotions get the best of me and beat the piss out of the attacker if my wife did stop me first. Regardless hopefully the attacker has charges pressed on him and he gets expelled from high school competition.

I went to school in the 90’s and saw the same things, but I’m 40 years old now and have some perspective.
We were both lucky. All it takes is one perfectly landed punch or one awkward bodyslam and good old fisticuffs turns into Murder 2 or manslaughter pretty quick. Violence is never a good idea and should be punished in accordance with the law.
I’m not saying the kid who sucker punched the runner should be sentence to 30 years hard labor, but there should be a proportional legal ramification for enacting violence on someone else. Otherwise we’re a generation removed from the return of duels and blood feuds.
