But...would the Jim Ryun who tried out with a 5:36 or so in a time trial make the team, no. I don't think he would have been allowed on the team. I'm pretty sure they have cuts and wouldn't have taken him.
That could be but it could also be like when Michael Jordan did not make the Varsity hoops team and used that as motivation maybe Jim comes back after being cut and says “I am going to be so good that this coach cannot possibly cut me.” Who knows?
Line him up in those 1960 shoes and the NP group is still watching his back. Maybe the NP will take that next step and drop a 355 mile and we can start having this conversation.
From your post did you notice that Ryun's 2 mile performances were no where near his 1/2 mile & one mile performances? I would hope if a current coach had Jim Ryun, a current high school coach would have made Ryun an 800m specialist. In the weight room and film sessions, fix Ryun's running form. Ryun should have been an 800m medalists, 1968 & 1972. Ryun's training and chasing one mile dreams prevented Ryun from achieving his 800m potential.

You do realize Ryun set the American record in the two mile
Ryun would be the top miler/800m runner on Newbury in todays spikes and tracks. He would be scoring on their varsity XC team (3rd or 4th man probably).
