They've had a great (friendly) rivalry going on since they were HS juniors. Over the past year or 2, it looked like Nico was definitively better than Cole, but Cole's closed the gap somewhat this indoor season. Who do you think will eventually come out on top?
Still think Nico who was very much in the mix all race. Props to Cole on a very strong season. Nico still projects to me as a 10,000 guy but I think he’s gonna be really good on the US scene. Gotta give props to Abdi Nur, though, he made it look like child’s play. Looks like he will be a contender very soon. That was a dominant victory.
I was surprised to see Cole's recent 27:42 10000m fly mostly under the radar - that's an incredible time for the sophomore and almost as good as Nico's 13:11 5000m at Sound Running. Great times for both.
without nur, i dont think nico will be improving the way he was with nur..cole will eventually catch up, needless to say cole has a better kick than nico young
Until Cole beats Nico again, I think we have to give Nico the benefit of the doubt. I don't think Cole has beat Nico in a single race since NXN their junior year. Nico beat him at Arcadia and has only distanced himself since then. Cole is a similar level of talent, and might have trained a bit less in HS than Nico did. But we'll have to see what they do long-term.
I would have to think that Nur sticks around Flagstaff once he goes pro, just like Luis Grijalva. Seems like he's found his place there and would be content using the NAU facilities while raking in the big dough from the shoe companies.
I think that's fair, but if I were buying stock in one of them it would be Cole. I may be proven wrong of course, but I think Nico is closer to his max potential than Cole is, and I think Cole may have the greater long-term upside. Cole was also hurt last fall which set him back a little bit. Also think the training situation is good at Stanford with Hicks and Robinson and a good coach in Ricardo Santos, but not quite what Nico has at NAU and with the altitude in Flagstaff.
How can you possibly know who has greater long-term upside? What we do know is they have improved well since HS and Young was faster then and he is now. He also has a significantly faster 1500m PR.
I don’t know if Cole ran to and from school but he was raised at 6000’ so Young has no advantage from training at altitude.
